STORY 1: Woman gets 30 years for abuse of stepchildren

Nora Andrea Rodgers, 27, of Covington, who was accused of physically, mentally, and emotionally abusing her three stepchildren, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison, with the first 30 to be served in prison and the remaining 30 on probation. She pleaded guilty to nine counts of cruelty to children in the first degree in October. The abuse included extreme bootcamp-style exercises, beatings, and malnutrition. The children were removed from Rodgers' care and placed in foster care. The prosecution team worked to secure a sentence that ensures Rodgers remains in prison well into adulthood, protecting the victims from further harm.

STORY 2: Morgan County inmate dies by suicide

Jonathan Neil Bishop, a 41-year-old inmate at the Morgan County Detention Center in Georgia, was found dead in his cell, apparently by hanging. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) conducted a preliminary investigation and determined that Bishop's death was "self-inflicted." He was discovered during a routine check of inmates, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Bishop had pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated child molestation, four counts of child molestation, and one count of enticing a child for indecent purposes on Nov. 27, 2023. He was sentenced to life with 25 years to serve before probation eligibility.

STORY 3: Local father who died saving son from fire awarded Carnegie Medal for heroism

Thomas Lee Hawk of Bostwick, who bravely entered his burning home in an attempt to save his trapped teenage son, has been posthumously awarded the 2023 Carnegie Medal, North America's highest honor for civilian heroism. On December 16, 2022, Hawk's home caught fire, and he rushed inside after receiving a frantic call from his son. Tragically, he succumbed to smoke and flames. The Carnegie Medal recognizes individuals who risk serious injury or death to save others. Hawk's act of extraordinary heroism is among the 10,405 instances acknowledged by the Carnegie Hero Fund since its establishment in 1904.

STORY 4: Rockdale County Amends Code to Limit Businesses with Off-Premise Sale of Distilled Spirits

Rockdale County unanimously approved changes to its zoning ordinance, aiming to limit the number of retail establishments selling distilled spirits for off-premise consumption. The move follows an analysis comparing the number of such establishments in Rockdale County and the city of Conyers. The ordinance now doubles the distance between package stores and areas like schools, places of worship, and municipal buildings to 1,000 yards. This amendment aims to diversify the county's economic development opportunities beyond package and liquor stores, offering fair space for various businesses. The changes do not impact the sale of beer, wine, or liquor in restaurants.

STORY 5: Scenes for new sports movie 'Signing Day' filmed in Rutledge

The town of Rutledge in Georgia welcomed film crews for the shooting of the upcoming college football movie "Signing Day." The dramatic comedy, written and directed by Glen Owen, stars Michael Mosley, Rob Morgan, and Mira Sorvino. The film revolves around the ambitious football coach Walt McFadden, aiming to sign the nation's top defensive end, Tony Raymond. The story unfolds in a small town in Alabama, exploring comical misadventures and the impact of NIL (name, image, likeness) deals on young recruits. The film, produced entirely in Georgia, explores the frenzy of college football recruiting and National Signing Day.
