STORY 1: Monday Police Chase Ends with Two Deaths

In Gordon County, an incident early Monday involving a police pursuit concluded with two individuals deceased and another seriously injured. The sequence of events was set into motion following law enforcement's response to a report concerning a potentially stolen Chevrolet Silverado located at a gas station.

The situation escalated as the suspect initiated a high-speed chase upon police intervention, eventually entering I-75. The chase reached a critical juncture near mile marker 304, where the Silverado collided with a Buick SUV, causing the death of the Silverado's driver and inflicting serious injuries on the SUV's driver.

A subsequent accident occurred when two vehicles, attempting to evade the initial collision, were involved in another fatal crash. This incident led to a Toyota Corolla overturning, injuring its driver, and the death of the driver of a Hyundai Genesis G70. The Calhoun Police Department is conducting thorough investigations into both accidents, with further details to be disclosed following the conclusion of these inquiries.

STORY 2: GNTC Honors Electrical Lineworker Program Graduates

On March 27, sixteen students achieved graduation from the Electrical Lineworker program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, hosted at the Polk County Campus.

Upon completion, graduates were awarded four certificates, including Electrical Lineworker certification and a restricted Class A Commercial Truck Driving license, among others. The forthcoming session of the program is scheduled to commence on April 29, with enrollment currently open for prospective applicants.

For further details regarding the program or application process, interested individuals are encouraged to visit the GNTC website or reach out to the Office of Economic Development.

STORY 3: Students Face Real Life Choices at Polk Teen Maze

The Polk Teen Maze, organized by Polk Family Connection, aimed to educate 10th-grade students about the consequences of their actions through a dramatization of a fatal ATV accident caused by drinking. Student volunteers shared the tragic story, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices.

The maze, supported by over 100 volunteers including first responders and law enforcement, featured various stations representing life choices and their consequences. Additionally, an outdoor simulation of a wreck and a setup mimicking a funeral chapel were employed to further stress the severe repercussions of actions.

Polk Prevention and Recovery Alliance provided information on substance abuse prevention, aiming to empower students to make informed choices. The event aimed to leave a lasting impact on students and promote positive decision-making.

STORY 4: Rome Police Department Prepares To Move To Technology Parkway

The Rome Police Department is preparing to relocate its headquarters to a new facility on Technology Parkway, a decision stemming from the 10-year sales tax agreement finalized in 2022.

Although most departmental functions will transfer to the new location without issue, the evidence room and vehicle maintenance operations will temporarily remain downtown due to limited space at the new site.

Despite the change in location, the Rome Police Department is committed to preserving its strong community ties and continuing its dedication to public service.

Additionally, plans are in progress for the establishment of a permanent headquarters in the downtown area, supported by a $20 million investment from the 2023 special purpose local option sales tax initiative.

STORY 5: Puberty Blockers Bill Fails in General Assembly

Legislation aimed at prohibiting the use of puberty blockers for minors diagnosed with gender dysphoria did not progress in the Georgia General Assembly. The bill, which had successfully passed the Senate, failed to secure a vote in the House prior to the conclusion of the legislative session.

Proponents of the bill, primarily from the Republican party, argued that the use of puberty blockers could lead to irreversible consequences. In contrast, Democratic members highlighted the necessity of empowering parents and medical professionals to determine the most appropriate course of action for the wellbeing of the child.

STORY 7: Leah McGrath
