STORY 1: Trump Rally Announced for The Forum in Downtown Rome This Saturday

Despite last-minute attempts to change the venue to the Floyd County airport, a rally for presidential candidate Donald Trump in Rome is still scheduled to take place at The Forum downtown. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had advocated for moving the rally to accommodate a larger crowd, citing the success of a previous rally at the airport. However, her social media posts suggesting the change were later removed. The original venue, The Forum, has a capacity of over 3,000, while the airport previously hosted a rally drawing over 20,000 attendees. Negotiations between the Trump campaign, Secret Service, and local officials have been ongoing, with exact details of the rally still pending. This announcement coincides with President Joe Biden's plans to visit the Atlanta area on the same day, setting the stage for a potential rematch between the two candidates in November's election.

STORY 2: 108th Soldiers Begin Support Mission in Kosovo

Soldiers from the 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment, based in Calhoun, have commenced their mission in Kosovo after completing pre-deployment training. The transfer of authority ceremony marked the official handover process. After activation in November, soldiers underwent training at Fort Stewart before a sendoff ceremony in January. Further training in Texas and Germany focused on honing skills and conducting missions alongside multinational partners. Now in Kosovo, the unit is tasked with supporting the NATO-led Kosovo Force. Community members can support deployed soldiers and their families through the Family Readiness Group or the Calhoun Veterans of Foreign Wars Renis Barrett Post 5376. Contact information is available for those interested in providing assistance.

STORY 3: Catoosa Fifth-Graders Produce Winning Animated Video About WWII

Catoosa County fifth-graders Aiden Dillon and David Li won first place at the Northwest Regional Tech Competition with their animated video depicting the World War II invasion of Normandy. The seven-minute video, titled "The One Brave Hero," portrays the realities of war, including danger, heroism, and sacrifice. Aiden and David crafted the animation to convey the emotional and physical challenges faced by soldiers. Their interest in WWII led them to choose this topic for their project. Despite the complexity of animation production, the students successfully created a cohesive and impactful narrative. While they don't plan to pursue tech or animation careers, they are proud of their achievement and will compete at the state level in the Georgia Student Technology Competition.

STORY 5: Contested Races Set Up As Qualifying Continues This Week

Contested races emerged for Floyd County sheriff and several state representative and senate seats, with incumbents facing challengers from both parties. Sheriff Dave Roberson and challenger Robbie Whitfield, both Republicans and law enforcement veterans, are vying for the sheriff's post. Democrat Shawn Harris is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for the 14th Congressional District seat. Additionally, Democrats Kevin Aronhalt and Logan Johnson are running for state House seats held by Republicans Katie Dempsey and Eddie Lumsden, respectively. Bart Alexander Bryant aims to unseat Republican state Sen. Colton Moore. Several incumbents, including Floyd County Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne and Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor, have qualified for re-election. Qualifying for various local and judicial offices continues through Friday, with candidates from both parties participating.
