STORY 1: Trial For One of Three Men Accused of Killing Rome Sisters to Begin in November
The trial for Desmond Lavonta Brown, one of the three men charged with the killing of two half-sisters in Rome in May 2020, is scheduled to begin in early November. Attorneys will start selecting a jury on November 6. Brown and his co-defendant Devin Lashawn Watts are facing the death penalty in Cherokee County, Alabama, after being accused of killing Vanita Nicole Richardson and Truvenia Campbell. The case was moved to Alabama due to cellphone evidence indicating the killings occurred in that jurisdiction. Christopher Leedarius Pullen is also charged in the case but doesn't face the death penalty. The killings are believed to have occurred over a misplaced wallet.
STORY 2: Calhoun Gym Employees Credited With Saving Man's Life
On October 16, Harry Russell experienced a cardiac episode at Planet Fitness in Calhoun, leading to his heart stopping due to ventricular tachycardia. Quick actions by gym employees Katelyn Shigekawa, Brenique Lewis, and Shelby Purvine saved his life. Katelyn dialed 911, Brenique administered CPR, and Shelby set up a defibrillator device. Ten days later, after being discharged from the hospital, Russell returned to Planet Fitness in good health and delivered cookies to the employees as a token of gratitude. He credited Brenique Lewis with saving his life. Russell is now on medication and in the process of recovery.
STORY 3: Two Catoosa County Schools Recognized as Georgia Literacy Leaders by Georgia Department Of Education
Cloud Springs Elementary and West Side Elementary in Catoosa County, Georgia, have been recognized as Georgia Literacy Leaders by the Georgia Department of Education for their growth in third-grade reading. Out of 155 schools that qualified for this recognition, 84 were acknowledged for their growth in third-grade reading achievement. Superintendent Chance Nix praised the schools' focus on literacy and their commitment to improving student reading outcomes. To qualify for the Georgia Literacy Leader award, schools must either have 90% or more of third-grade students reading at grade level or above or show a 15% or higher increase in the percentage of third-grade students reading at grade level or above compared to the previous year.

STORY 4: Jan. 6 Charges Unsealed for Adairsville Man Accused of Assault During Insurrection
Jacob Davis, a 31-year-old Adairsville man, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Davis is accused of assaulting police officers during the riot. He was identified through photos taken during the attack, where he was seen wearing a red, white, and blue Trump beanie, black glasses, a black Space Force hoodie, and at times, a black mask. His images were referred to as 353-AFO. A witness who had known Davis for years identified him from the photos. Davis faces felony charges, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder. He also faces misdemeanor charges related to his actions during the Capitol breach. Over 1,100 people have been charged in connection with the attack on the Capitol.
STORY 5: Questions Remain As Sale of Summit Hill Foods Operations Nears
Summit Hill Foods, formerly Southeastern Mills, is in the process of selling its operations, with the likely closing date at the end of the year, December 31. The company's 81 employees at the Rome plant have been informed, and efforts are being made to support their transition. Part of the plant, where the employees work, is owned by Grain Craft, and Grain Craft has not revealed its plans for the plant after the sale of Summit Hill Foods. The company's dry goods business, which produces goods for other companies and consumer-facing products, has been sold to two different companies. Summit Hill Foods will maintain operations in Lindale and a Center for Superior Logistics in the Floyd County Industrial Park.

STORY 6: Cedartown High School Recognizes Past Championship Football Teams
Cedartown High School celebrated the legacy of football with a special ceremony recognizing the successes of two state championship teams from 1953 and 1963. The 1953 Cedar Hill High School team, coached by Escue Rodgers, achieved a perfect 10-0 record and secured a state championship by defeating the Jesup Tigers. The 1963 Cedartown High School team, led by head coach Doc Ayers, marked its 60th anniversary this year after winning the Class AA state finals by defeating North Clayton 21-7. The event also included introductions of youth football teams and cheerleaders from the Cedartown Recreation Department and recognition of former fall sport athletes.
STORY 7: No Off Season for the Owners of the Team Formerly Known as the Rome Braves.
Diamond Baseball Holdings, the owners of the Team Formerly Known as the Rome Braves, have recently acquired several minor league teams, including the Birmingham Barons, Tulsa Drillers, Albuquerque Isotopes, and Norfolk Tides. The Rome team is expected to be rebranded soon. While there have been reports of a potential relocation in 2025, possibly to Columbus, it's crucial to have a Plan B. One option could be participating in Collegiate Summer Leagues, which have become more prominent since MLB revamped the minor league system. The Coastal Plain League, featuring teams like the Macon Bacon, provides a shorter season with built-in fan support and community acceptance. This might be a viable alternative for Rome's baseball future.
We’ll have closing comments after this.
