STORY 1: Traffic Stop, Gunshot Leads to Chase and Arrests in Downtown Calhoun

A traffic stop in downtown Calhoun escalated into a chase and resulted in three arrests. Georgia State Patrol initiated the stop suspecting the driver of DUI. During a field sobriety test, a gunshot was fired from inside the vehicle, prompting two passengers to flee. Law enforcement set up a perimeter and deployed K-9 units and aviation support but couldn't locate the suspects. A firearm and shell casing were found in the car, with no reported injuries. Three individuals were arrested, but details beyond the initial report are pending.

STORY 2: Police: Cartersville Woman Charged in Man's Stabbing Death

Tyla Nasha Coleman, 30, of Cartersville, has been charged with murder after a man, identified as Bryson Miller, 35, was fatally stabbed late Sunday. Cartersville Police responded to the incident at 35 Collins Place, finding the victim with a stab wound to the neck. He later succumbed to his injuries at Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center. Coleman was arrested and booked into the Bartow County Jail on one count of murder during the commission of a felony. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Criminal Investigative Division. Miller's family has initiated an online donations account to assist with his funeral expenses.

STORY 3: Former Atlanta CFO Pleads Guilty in Corruption Probe

Former Atlanta Chief Financial Officer Jim Beard, 60, has pleaded guilty to federal program theft and obstructing an IRS audit. Beard, who oversaw the city's Department of Finance from 2011 to 2018, devised a scheme to use his authority to obtain money and property from the city for personal use, including paying for personal travel expenses and purchasing restricted machine guns. He also submitted false tax returns to the IRS, claiming business losses and providing fake receipts for personal expenses. Beard faces up to 13 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for July. The FBI and IRS investigated the case.

STORY 4: Georgia Braces for Another Round of Election Law Changes

Georgia's General Assembly passed significant election law changes, the most since 2021, affecting the upcoming November election. Five bills passed, including SB 189, which facilitates mass voter challenges, and HB 1207, allowing fewer voting machines and closer access for poll watchers. SB 368 prohibits campaign contributions from foreign nationals, while HB 974 mandates a statewide system to scan and post paper ballots. HB 1312 reschedules Public Service Commission elections due to a Voting Rights Act lawsuit. Democrats and voting-rights advocates criticize SB 189 and HB 1207, fearing more challenges and reduced voting access. Republicans argue the bills restore election integrity after claims of fraud in 2020. Despite opposition, most bills passed, with some becoming law for the November election.

STORY 5: What Does New Federal Funds Mean For Cedartown's Tree Planting Efforts?

Cedartown has been awarded $200,000 over four years through the Trees Across Georgia program to enhance the city's tree canopy. The initiative aims to increase tree planting and canopy cover while promoting urban and community forestry. Cedartown plans to use the grant to develop a comprehensive tree program, focusing on improving canopy cover to mitigate heat-island effects and enhance public health. The project will include tree planting on public and private property, community outreach, staff training, and development of storm readiness plans. The goal is to increase canopy cover from 43% to 50% and stimulate tree-related businesses and employment opportunities.

STORY 7: Leah McGrath

And now here is Bruce Jenkins conversation with Leah McGrath on the difference between a nutritionist and registered dietician.
