STORY 1: Summerville Man Charged With Child Molestation

A Summerville man, Mark Thirston Tate, is facing child molestation charges after allegedly engaging in graphic texts with someone he believed to be a child under 16 years old. The charges include felony child molestation and obscene internet contact. Tate reportedly traveled to a location in Floyd County with the intention of meeting the child and engaging in acts that would constitute child molestation. As of Monday afternoon, he remains in jail without bond.

STORY 2: Coosa River Basin Initiative Discovers Widespread PFAS Contamination. Here's What We Know

The Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) and Coosa Riverkeeper are collaborating on a project to monitor per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in the Coosa River Basin in Georgia and Alabama. PFAS are persistent chemicals associated with potential health risks. Samples collected from strategic locations in the basin during the summer of 2023 showed widespread PFAS contamination, with 84.62% of sampling sites affected. The collaboration aims to provide valuable insights into contamination distribution, prioritize mitigation efforts, and contribute to ongoing discussions on water quality and public health in the region. The findings will be shared with the public and stakeholders.

STORY 3: Prosecutors Oversight Bill Clears Georgia House

The Georgia House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, has passed legislation (House Bill 881) that would allow the newly created oversight board for prosecutors, the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, to set its own rules. The bill follows legislation passed last year that created the commission to investigate complaints against local district attorneys. The panel has the power to remove prosecutors for offenses such as willful misconduct or failure to perform duties. However, the state Supreme Court ruled last fall that it does not have the authority to review the rules the commission adopts, leading to the new bill turning over that authority to the commission itself. Democrats raised concerns about checks on the commission's power, accountability, and potential targeting of elected district attorneys. The bill now goes to the state Senate.
