STORY 1: cochran

During a caucus meeting of the Rome City Commissioners, a rift among the members expanded, particularly regarding the ethics investigation of Ward 1 incumbent Mark Cochran. The meeting, which lasted nearly an hour, ended with a decision to have a Floyd County Superior Court review on August 21. The commissioners first voted on whether to have a closed meeting to discuss the case and potential settlement, but the vote failed. Commissioner Jamie Doss then requested permission to read a statement about the Cochran investigation, which caused further disagreement. The discussion became heated and divided along racial lines. Money was also a key issue, with questions raised about the city's expenses related to the investigation. The ethics investigation stemmed from complaints about Cochran's behavior towards city employees. The investigation has created tension within the commission, partly due to Cochran's swing vote on key issues and the upcoming city commission elections. …….get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: flyers

Residents in Floyd County and the Old East Rome neighborhood found plastic bags containing flyers with antisemitic, anti-LGBTQ, and racist messages. The flyers were distributed indiscriminately across large areas, and some residents reported capturing video of individuals throwing them from a small white or silver sedan. The flyers contained conspiracy-driven phrases, false information about LGBTQ individuals, and relied heavily on antisemitic tropes. They all seem to originate from Goyim TV, operated by the Goyim Defense League, known for its virulent antisemitism. The flyers express a belief in a Jewish mafia that has supposedly hijacked the country. Police are investigating the incidents.

STORY 3: corridors

Polk County is experiencing a surge in commercial and residential development along two key corridors. In Cedartown, the Rome Highway area has witnessed the opening of new businesses like Wendy's and Chick-fil-A. Construction is underway for a Mavis Tires & Brakes auto service center and two new businesses, Jack's and Ellianos Coffee. Additionally, plans are in place for 15 houses on the southside and a development with 27 duplexes. Rockmart is also attracting developers due to its location along 278, particularly the Nathan Dean Bypass. A multi-tenant shopping center and a stand-alone Mavis Tires & Brakes are being built, with T-Mobile as a confirmed tenant. Other ongoing projects include a new Pizza Hut location, two liquor stores, and the search for a tenant for the former Gildan Yarns plant.

STORY 4: greene

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has been expelled from the House Freedom Caucus, the largest conservative club in Congress, due to her contentious feud with fellow Republican Representative Lauren Boebert. Greene referred to Boebert as an expletive during a dispute on the House floor, which played a significant role in her expulsion. The altercation stemmed from their conflicting proposals to impeach President Joe Biden. Greene accused Boebert of copying her articles of impeachment, leading to a heated exchange between the two representatives. This is not the first public fight between Greene and Boebert, despite their shared conservative views. The expulsion means Greene will no longer be able to participate in the caucus's strategy sessions, where members discuss plans such as shutting down the government and impeaching Biden.

STORY 5:  quick

Randy Quick, a Rome City Commissioner, has been sworn in as a member of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) Board of Directors for the 2023-2024 term. He will serve as the first vice president of District One, representing 15 counties in Northwest Georgia. Quick expressed his honor in representing Rome and highlighted the GMA's role in providing leadership tools and services to assist municipal governments. The GMA Board of Directors oversees the organization, adopts governance policies, and advocates for cities' legislative interests at the state and federal levels. Quick's appointment was well-received, and the board was elected and installed during the GMA's Annual Convention in Savannah.   Read more at northwestgeorgianews.com
