STORY 1: State hits No2Rivian plaintiffs with petition for 600K in legal fees

The State of Georgia and the Joint Development Authority (JDA) are seeking over $600,000 in legal fees from the No2Rivian plaintiffs. This group has been opposing the Rivian Electric Vehicle (EV) megafactory project, leading to considerable legal costs through their numerous lawsuits.

The $5 billion Rivian project has been met with resistance due to its proposed location and potential environmental impact. The plaintiffs have been challenging aspects such as tax deals and zoning ordinances, which has resulted in a series of legal battles.

Despite the dismissal of previous cases, the No2Rivian plaintiffs persist in appealing court rulings. The state contends that these lawsuits are baseless and obstructive, while the plaintiffs argue they are being unfairly silenced.

STORY 2: Judge Clarence Cuthpert Honored During Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, State Court Judge Clarence Cuthpert Jr. has been acknowledged by the Georgia Administrative Office of the Courts for his significant achievement as the first Black State Court judge in Rockdale County.

Appointed to the State Court bench by Governor Brian Kemp in February 2021, Cuthpert is now a contender for Rockdale Superior Court in the upcoming May nonpartisan election. Before his State Court appointment, Cuthpert had been elected as the Probate Court judge in 2016 and subsequently re-elected in 2020.

In addition to these accomplishments, Cuthpert was recently inaugurated as the chair of the Gate City Bar Association Judicial Section during the 2024 Installation Ceremony. The Gate City Bar Association, founded in 1948, is Georgia's oldest minority bar association. Cuthpert has been an active member of its judicial section since it was established in 2005, serving as a member-at-large and chair-elect before assuming his current role.

STORY 3: Ramsey’s Furniture to end 105-year legacy

Ramsey's Furniture, a Newton County staple for over a century, is shutting its doors permanently. The family-owned business, founded in 1919, has been a trusted source for home furnishings and a community pillar.

Known for their integrity and personalized customer service, they've also actively supported local charities and churches.

The closure will follow a liquidation sale beginning February 22, offering significant discounts on furniture and accessories. Despite the end of this era, the Ramsey family's community legacy endures.

STORY 4: Tene Davis Announces Bid for Rockdale Board of Education

Dr. Tene Davis, a seasoned educator and local leader, has announced her bid for the Post 5 seat on the Rockdale County Board of Education, challenging current holder Akita Parmer.

Davis, with a decade-long tenure at Georgia State University where she developed K-12 programs, is a strong advocate for educators in leadership roles.

She's active in the community, serving as the Young Adult Leadership Development director at a nonprofit and chairing the Lorraine Elementary School Local School Council. Her focus areas include school safety, community engagement, transparency, and teacher and student retention.

Davis, who holds a master's in education and a Ph.D. in educational policy studies, encourages collective investment in children, the education system, and the community.

STORY 5: Eastside Girls Eliminated by Creekside in State Playoffs

Eastside girls basketball team's journey in the state playoffs came to an end after a 52-39 loss against Creekside. The game was set up as a clash of titans with Eastside riding a four-game home winning streak and Creekside enjoying a three-game away victory run. However, Creekside emerged victorious, ending Eastside's season at 16-11.

The first quarter saw a balanced offensive attack from Creekside, securing a 20-14 lead over Eastside. Jailyn Williams of Eastside and C’India Dennis of Creekside both scored six points in this quarter.

Eastside's struggle for rhythm continued into the second quarter, scoring only eight points compared to Creekside's 16. Despite stepping up their defense in the third quarter and limiting Creekside to eight points, Eastside's offensive issues persisted.

Despite their determination going into the fourth quarter, Eastside couldn't overcome their offensive struggles, resulting in their elimination from the playoffs. The final score stood at 52-39 in favor of Creekside.

STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH
