STORY 1: Silver Creek Man To Get New Trial In Armed Robbery Case

The case against 26-year-old Branton Kaden Hughes, convicted in 2022 on armed robbery charges and given a life sentence, is back on the court calendar after the conviction was overturned. Hughes was accused of robbing a truck driver in 2021 alongside co-defendant Tatiana Clifton. The motion for a new trial highlighted errors, including the judge's failure to instruct jurors on Georgia law requiring accomplice testimony corroboration. Hughes' family cited his undiagnosed mental health issues during the sentencing, advocating for help rather than imprisonment. The case is scheduled for a January 24 calendar call before Floyd County Superior Court Chief Judge John “Jack” Niedrach.

STORY 2: Man Charged With Stolen Firearm In Connection With Pinson Road Fatal Shooting Investigation

Makaylen Deshaud Sullivan, 23, of Leafmore Road, has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Jamon Kenterius Allen in Shannon last year. While not charged with the shooting, Sullivan faces charges related to the possession of two stolen pistols and making false statements to police. Charges include felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, theft by receiving stolen pistols, possession of a firearm during a crime, making false statements, and false reporting of a crime. The investigation revealed a Glock 9mm pistol used in the shooting, spent shell casings, an American Tactical rifle, marijuana, and ammunition. The arrest is linked to the case, but details remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. Sullivan was initially arrested on a probation violation charge shortly after the shooting. The incident involved Annel Jacobo Contreras, 24, who shot Allen at her Pinson Road home, suspecting him of burglary. Contreras and Sullivan faced probation violations but were not charged with the shooting. The investigation and Sullivan's arrest shed light on the complex circumstances surrounding Allen's death.

STORY 3: Cedartown's Grace Ann Lundy wins title of Miss JSU

Cedartown's Grace Ann Lundy, a sophomore majoring in early childhood/elementary education, won her first-ever pageant, the 2024 Miss Jacksonville State University Pageant. The competition included 12 contestants, and Lundy secured the title of Miss JSU along with the talent portion victory for her jazz dance performance. The win grants her a two-semester scholarship and the chance to represent the university at the Miss Alabama pageant, a qualifier for Miss America. Lundy, with no prior pageant experience, expressed honor and pride in being part of the Miss JSU sisterhood. Her social initiative, "Let's Talk About It," addresses depression and anxiety challenges for college students. The Miss America organization offers significant scholarships at various levels, fostering educational support for young women.

STORY 4: Calhoun Police Department Presented Highway Safety Awards

At the Calhoun City Council meeting, several police officers displayed five awards earned by the Calhoun Police Department from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety annual awards. The awards include the Governor's Cup, Traffic Enforcement Network of the Year (Mountain Area, first place), Child Passenger Safety Program award, Teen Driver Safety Program award, and Governor's Challenge Category 3 (first place). The council approved two significant equipment purchases: a tandem dump truck for the water and sewer department costing $179,623 and a portable water pump with an engine for water distribution costing $97,600. Other approvals included a temporary moratorium extension, Jim Mathews' four-year term extension, and agreements related to mutual aid, retirement plans, and police uniform supplies. The council also approved financial statements and the proposed budget calendar. The next council meeting is scheduled for February 12, 7 p.m., at the Depot, open to the public.

STORY 5: Historical Wilson School in Ringgold to Be Recognized 75 Years After Its Inception

The city of Ringgold plans to honor The Wilson School, the only school for African American children in Catoosa County from 1949-66, with a dedicated monument. The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for February 13 at 1 p.m. at the former school site, now Ringgold High's JROTC building. The Wilson School operated with small class sizes despite challenges, and its existence remained largely unnoticed until City Council member Earl Henderson initiated the monument project. The stone monument, approved by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, features a bronze-embossed placard with a QR code linking to a dedicated webpage. The city aims to highlight Ringgold's black history through this initiative, and the dedication ceremony is open to the public.
