STORY 1: Several seriously injured in car, motorhome crash

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a serious crash involving a Mercedes Benz and a Winnebago motorhome. The Mercedes, traveling southbound on Ga. Highway 162, crossed the centerline and collided with the northbound Winnebago near Wellington Trail at around 6:40 p.m. Children on board the Winnebago sustained significant injuries and were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and Scottish Rite. The Winnebago's driver and passenger were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The Mercedes driver, suspected of DUI, was also transported to Grady with serious injuries. The GSP has not released the names of those involved.

STORY 2: Rockdale County Public Facilities Authority approves $110 million bond resolution

The Rockdale County Public Facilities Authority has approved a resolution for the issuance of $110 million in revenue bonds for the construction of the county’s proposed judicial and administrative complex. The complex is projected to cost $110 million to construct, with additional soft costs and contingencies. The county will contribute $10 million from its fund balance and $20 million from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax collections. The complex will include new courthouse and administrative spaces, renovation of existing space, a parking deck, plaza, and site improvements. The authority's approval initiates the bond validation process, with a subsequent vote finalizing interest rates and bond amounts required before issuance.

STORY 3: Morgan County High moved to Region 2 AA next year

Morgan County High School in Georgia has been reclassified to Region 2AA from its current AAA status as part of a state-wide reclassification effort by the Georgia High School Association. The reclassification includes the elimination of the 7A designation for Georgia High Schools, with classes now ranging from A to 6A. Region 2AA will be a six-team region starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. The new region includes Westside High School, Rutland High School, Jackson High School, Pike High School, and Callaway High School. The inclusion of Morgan County in a region with Callaway High School poses travel challenges due to the distance exceeding 100 miles. Contests between the two schools will need to be scheduled on days that do not precede a school day. Coaches are encouraged to add more local games to their schedules to address the small number of region schools.

STORY 4: Newton County Commissioners hear pitch for increased pay for attorneys

Newton County District Attorney Randy McGinley and Circuit Public Defender Anthony Carter are requesting increased funding for attorneys in their offices due to challenges in hiring and retaining legal staff. They presented a proposal to the Newton County Board of Commissioners, emphasizing that the current pay scale makes it difficult to attract applicants for assistant district attorney and assistant public defender positions. The neighboring counties offer substantially higher salaries, leading to vacancies in their offices throughout the year. The proposed pay scale includes starting pay for attorneys at $75,000 and aims to address the compensation and retention issues, which both officials consider a crisis situation. County Manager Harold Cooper will conduct a market data analysis to make recommendations in early 2024.

STORY 5: Civil Air Patrol takes flight with Morgan students

Morgan County Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Cadet Squadron in Georgia provided students with their first aviation experience, offering five cadets the opportunity to take their inaugural flights. The CAP program focuses on aerospace education, physical training, safety, and character development, filling the void left after the disbandment of the Morgan County High School's JROTC program in 2021. The squadron has been officially chartered as the Morgan County CAP Cadet Squadron, led by Air Force Veteran 2nd Lt Matt Stoops, Army Veteran SSgt Brian Mitchell, and AG Teacher Briana Stoops. The program aims to provide aviation enthusiasts with a fun and structured learning environment.
