STORY 1: Rome Woman Charged With Second-Degree Vehicular Homicide in Motorcycle Collision
Kathleen D. Wilson from Rome, Georgia, has been charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and failure to yield after a collision on December 6 that resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. Daniel Eddy, a 19-year-old Rome resident, died on December 7 from injuries sustained in the collision. Floyd County Police records indicate that Eddy was riding a Yamaha motorcycle southbound on Martha Berry when it collided with a northbound Jeep Compass driven by Wilson, who was turning into a restaurant parking lot. Eddy, known for his love of working out and Chick-fil-A, worked as an installer for Carter’s Environmental Services.
STORY 2: Man Convicted in 29-Year-Old Walker County Murder Case
Robert Allen Mowry, a 53-year-old man from Tullahoma, Tennessee, has been convicted by a Walker County jury for the 1994 murder of James Richard Harris in Chickamauga, Georgia. Mowry was sentenced to life in prison after a seven-day trial. Testimonies included forensic scientists, neighbors, coworkers, and law enforcement officers. The victim, James Harris, was found dead with signs of robbery and struggle. The case remained unsolved for 28 years until DNA analysis matched Mowry's DNA on cigarette butts obtained through surveillance. The Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit DA's Office Cold Case Unit played a crucial role in solving the case.
STORY 3: Rockmart Loses 3OT Thriller to Pierce County In State Championship Game
In the Class AA state championship game, Rockmart and Pierce County played a historic three-overtime marathon, with Pierce County emerging as the victor with a 48-45 score. The game tied the record for the most overtimes in Georgia High School Association state finals history. STORY 4: Third Floyd Resident in as Many Weeks Dies From Covid
In the past week, a third Floyd County resident succumbed to COVID-19, and another individual's death was attributed to an illness where the virus played a role. The state Department of Public Health reported 92 new COVID-19 cases in the five-county region, marking the highest level in a month. Floyd County had 26 new cases, Bartow 29, Gordon 14, Polk 17, and Chattooga six. Statewide, Georgia reported 2,231 new cases, up from 1,507 the previous week. The state recorded 29 COVID-19-related deaths in the past seven days. Since March 2020, Floyd County has lost 470 residents to COVID-19, with a regional total of 1,480 deaths.
STORY 5: Christmas tree care tips for fresh trees
When selecting a fresh Christmas tree, consider the room's ceiling height and choose a tree at least one foot shorter. Ensure pliable needles that adhere to branches without breaking or falling off. Shake the tree to confirm firm needle attachment and avoid wilted-looking trees. Check for a straight handle with a length of six to eight inches for the tree stand. Examine the crown for insects and dead needles. Cut one inch off the base if not placing the tree immediately and store it in water. Trim ½ to 1 inch off the trunk before placing it in a water-filled stand indoors. Keep the tree away from heat sources, regularly supply water, and avoid adding substances like aspirin to the water for fireproofing. Use only UL-approved lights and nonflammable decorations and never leave the tree lights on when away or sleeping.

STORY 6: Georgia, Alabama Bury Hatchet in Chattahoochee River case
Georgia and Alabama have reached an agreement to settle their long-standing legal dispute over water allocation from the Chattahoochee River Basin. The agreement involves a first-of-its-kind proposal for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to operate dams and reservoirs to achieve minimum water-flow objectives at specified locations. Additionally, the Corps will maintain the necessary minimum elevation at Lake Seminole. If the Corps adopts the agreement after a public-comment period, Alabama will drop a lawsuit challenging the Corps' operations, including Georgia's water-supply withdrawals near Atlanta. The agreement addresses water supply issues for Southwest Georgia and ends ongoing disputes related to Lake Lanier.
STORY 7: Millions in Opioid Settlement Funds Sit Untouched as Overdose Deaths Rise
Montana, despite receiving millions in opioid settlement funds, has been slow in allocating the money to combat the opioid crisis. The state began receiving payments in January, and as of early December, much of the $13 million remained unused. The Montana Opioid Abatement Trust, responsible for overseeing 70% of the funds, has met once to establish rules, and its money is locked behind an inactive grant portal. While some argue for urgency due to rising overdose deaths, those handling the funds emphasize the need to plan thoroughly. The tension reflects a nationwide challenge in allocating opioid settlement funds effectively.
We’ll have closing comments after this.
