STORY 1: suit

Settlements in a lawsuit over the release of toxic chemicals into Rome's waterways have reached nearly $159 million. The lawsuit aimed to recover the costs of removing PFAS and PFOAS from the city's drinking water. Settlements have been reached with 27 defendants, including Shaw Industries, 3M, and Mohawk, while agreements with larger chemical companies are expected to be finalized in September. The settlement funds will allow the city to roll back water rate hikes and cover the construction of a reverse osmosis water treatment facility. The city of Dalton has also pledged to take steps to prevent future releases of PFAS into waterways…….get more info on the settlement at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: polling

The Floyd County Elections Board is proposing changes to the voting precinct map, which would consolidate precincts and have polling locations where both city and county voters can cast their ballots. The goal is to align with practices in other parts of the state and save taxpayer money. The changes consider demographic shifts and aim to remove city or county islands within larger precincts. Combining precincts that currently share a location, such as Garden Lakes and Mount Alto North, would streamline operations by reducing the number of required poll workers. The proposal also aims to improve convenience for city residents by reducing travel time to polling locations…..see the proposed map  and read more at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 3: shootings:

2 separate shooting incidents occurred in Rome, resulting in one fatality and another individual sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The fatal shooting took place at the Callier Springs Apartments, where Te'Vian Markez Williams, 30, was found with a gunshot wound to the upper leg/groin area. Despite receiving first aid from responding officers, Williams was pronounced dead at Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center. The Rome Police Department is seeking a person of interest for questioning in connection with the incident. In a separate shooting on Wadsworth Street, Timothy Brandon Stubbs Jr., 26, was arrested for causing serious bodily injury to an individual with an AR-15 rifle. The victim, whose identity was not disclosed, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident marks the eighth killing in Rome this year.……we’ll be back after a quick timeout.

STORY 4: rockmart

A Rockmart man died in a single-vehicle accident when the car he was driving veered off the road and overturned, causing both him and his passenger to be ejected. The incident occurred on June 26 on Morgan Valley Road near Zuker Road in Rockmart. The driver, identified as Randall Brown, 22, lost control of the Chevrolet Cobalt while attempting to navigate a curve. The vehicle tilted, crossed the centerline, and overturned, eventually coming to rest in a field after striking a fence. Brown suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, Jonathan Coats, 22, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Kennestone Hospital. The Georgia State Patrol is actively investigating the accident, which involved no other vehicles.

Green, former head coach at Armuchee, brings knowledge, leadership, and a strong work ethic to the program. Boykin, previously the head coach at Holy Ground Baptist Academy, will serve as the head middle school football coach and varsity football assistant, as well as head middle school boys basketball coach and varsity baseball coach.
