STORY 1: armed

The Rome Police Department is seeking assistance to identify suspects involved in two recent armed robberies. In the first incident at Redmond Food Mart on July 31, an armed man entered after an older woman distracted the clerk. The suspect, described as small with a firearm, demanded money, taking around $2,300 and fleeing. The second robbery occurred on August 3 at Dollar General, where a tall female suspect with long black hair displayed a gun, demanding money from the register. Police are asking for information on the suspects, urging individuals with details to contact investigators Misael Castrejon at 706-238-5123 for the first case and Matt Cowan at 706-238-5129 for the second case.........…….get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: chase

Cortiyus Javari Ware Jr., a resident of Garden Lakes, was arrested and charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude police, as well as misdemeanor speeding and reckless driving. The arrest followed an incident where Ware allegedly sped away from a traffic stop on Alabama Highway, driving at high speeds and even on the wrong side of the road. As of Friday morning, he was in Floyd County Jail without bond.

STORY 3: post

Rome Mayor Sundai Stevenson has qualified for reelection to her Ward 1 seat on the City Commission, joining three other contenders for three seats representing downtown and North Rome. Incumbent Jim Bojo and new candidates Harry Brock and Charles Love have also qualified. Incumbent Commissioner Mark Cochran is yet to qualify. In Ward 3, all incumbents - Bill Collins, Bonny Askew, and Craig McDaniel - have qualified alongside new candidate Wayne Robinson. This race is significant as it could impact the balance of power on the commission. Qualifying ends Friday afternoon. In Cave Spring, two incumbents and two challengers have filed to run for two City Council seats.

STORY 4: covid

In the recent period, Northwest Georgia has reported a significant number of new COVID-19 cases, with 162 in Floyd County, 86 in Bartow County, 23 in Gordon County, 55 in Polk County, and 35 in Chattooga County. This surge has maintained the region's prominence in new COVID-19 reports. Over the past two weeks, public health data indicates the state recorded 76 cases per 100,000 residents. Notably, Chattooga County had 299 cases per 100,000, followed by 234 in Floyd County and 212 in Polk County. The area also witnessed two deaths among the 13 reported in Georgia over the week. Dr. Gary Voccio, health director for the Georgia Department of Public Health's Northwest Health District, addressed the rise in cases, particularly associated with the EG.5 variant, and mentioned a forthcoming COVID-19 vaccination targeting the omicron subvariant XBB.1.5.

STORY 5:  job

The job market in Floyd County and neighboring areas has shown changes in recent reports. Floyd County's unemployment rate rose slightly from 3.2% in July 2022 to 3.4% in July 2023. Other nearby counties like Bartow, Gordon, and Polk also saw small increases in their unemployment rates, with about 500 more people unemployed compared to last year, representing a 10% increase. Bartow County had the lowest unemployment rate in the region, with 1,646 unemployed individuals, while Chattooga County had the highest rate. The state Department of Labor reported a record labor force of 437,538 for the 15 counties in Northwest Georgia, including Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk, and Chattooga. Local job boards indicated over 110 job openings, concentrated mainly in education and government sectors. Rome/Floyd observed a growing labor force, with 305 new entrants, totaling 45,895. Rome reported 44,350 employed residents, up by 1,844 from last year, and closed July with 44,900 jobs, marking a record high.

STORY 6: advice

Catoosa County is seeking public input on the redevelopment of the Hutcheson Hospital property in Fort Oglethorpe through an online survey. The property was donated by Enots LLC to the county Economic Development Authority in 2021 and then transferred to the county Public Facility Authority. CHI Memorial Hospital-Georgia is currently leasing the main building and plans to construct a new hospital for North Georgia. A study by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, funded by the Lyndhurst Foundation, identified potential uses for the property. Citizens can provide their input by taking a short online survey at www.survey.uga.edu/HutchesonBuilding.

Story 7: case

After a four-year wait, progress seems imminent in the trial of Daylon Delon Gamble, accused in the 2019 shooting deaths of four people in Rockmart. A motion hearing originally set for August 24 has been rescheduled to September 7, with a subsequent status hearing on October 2. Gamble faces charges in two separate shootings in January 2019 near Rockmart's downtown area. He was arrested in Indiana after fleeing Rockmart and is represented by the Georgia Capital Defender office. Chief Superior Court Judge Mark Murphy is overseeing the case, delayed partly due to the pandemic and the complexities of a death penalty trial. A potential trial date is expected in 2024, possibly later in the year.

Story 8:  model

In an exciting match, the Model Lady Devils secured a thrilling 10-8 victory against local rival Darlington. Model took an early lead, building a 6-0 advantage in the first two innings, and led 7-1 into the fifth inning. Darlington fought back, scoring three in the fifth and four in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. However, Model's Lady Devils made a comeback with a three-run sixth inning, ultimately securing the win. Key contributors for Model included Sadie Raughton with 3 RBIs and 2 runs, Madison Reaves with a double and 2 RBIs, and Lily Akins with a double, triple, and 2 RBIs. Javia Samples, Callie Powers, and Katie Johnston also made important contributions. Reaves pitched the full seven innings, recording seven strikeouts.

Story 9:  dragons

In their home opener, the Pepperell softball team secured a 5-2 victory over Bowdon. Pitcher Caroline Morgan delivered an impressive performance, pitching a complete game with 14 strikeouts and one walk, allowing two runs on four hits. Morgan also contributed significantly to the offense with a three-run homer in the second inning. Sam Jones had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Aubrey Ashley and Chloe Stroud also made important contributions. Pepperell (3-1) is set to begin its Region 7-A Division I schedule by facing Armuchee on Thursday at 5 p.m.
