STORY 1: Rome Police Officer And Good Samaritans Rescue Woman And Child From Burning SUV

A woman and her son are expressing their immense gratitude to a Rome police officer and two good Samaritans who saved their lives after a car accident. The accident, involving three vehicles, occurred at the intersection of U.S. 411 and Mathis Road. The woman's SUV began smoking and then became engulfed in flames. Rome Police Department Officer Dow Turrentine, along with Christopher Jones and another bystander, rushed to the rescue. They managed to free the woman and her son just moments before the vehicle burst into flames. The injured driver is recovering in the hospital, while her son has been cleared by emergency room physicians. The police department commended its officers and the responders for their quick and brave actions.

STORY 2: Former Rockmart Police Officer Facing Charges From GBI

A former Rockmart police officer, Ronald Williams, was arrested after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation charged him with felony violation of oath by a public officer and misdemeanor tampering with evidence. Williams is accused of conducting an illegal traffic stop on his girlfriend between September 14 and October 3 while off duty and in uniform. He failed to notify relevant authorities and turned off his body camera during the stop. He later tried to delete specific body-camera footage and labeled it as "junk" to conceal or destroy it, believing it was a "personal matter" and not official police business. Williams was fired from the police department before his arrest.

STORY 3: Energy Assistance Program Opens for Homebound, Elderly on Dec. 1

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, administered by the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, is set to open on December 1 for homebound and elderly households, which is one month later than usual. "Homebound" households consist of members who are confined to their homes due to medical conditions or disabilities, while "elderly" households have members aged 65 or older. To apply for assistance, eligible households must meet income criteria, be responsible for their home heating costs, and be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Proof of income, Social Security numbers, citizenship, and age (for elderly households) are required during the application process. Assistance is provided as a one-time payment to offset heating costs, issued directly to the energy supplier. Applications should be made by calling the respective county's service center starting December 1.

The 2023 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum in Rome, Georgia, features funding requests for various public safety and infrastructure projects. The most critical request is a new Rome Police Department (RPD) headquarters, stemming from the need to vacate the Rome-Floyd County Law Enforcement Center and hand it over to the county. The Floyd County Police Department is relocating to the former Glenwood Primary School in Armuchee, which is one of the other SPLOST requests, along with a secure parking and evidence facility. The Rome Floyd Fire Department is seeking funds for new fire trucks, an emergency services vehicle, and self-contained breathing apparatus. Additionally, the Floyd County Jail has requested funds for upgrades, including replacing porcelain toilets with metal ones and improving lighting fixtures.

Gordon County plans to display a new traditional Christmas tree in front of the Gordon County Courthouse after a recent full remodel of the courthouse. The new tree, a nearly 30-foot-tall artificial Adirondack Pine, will be unveiled during the upcoming Gordon County Christmas event on November 11. This festive gathering will include a visit from Santa, free hot chocolate, cider, and popcorn. The tree's purchase, costing $45,854, was funded entirely from the interest earned from investments.
