STORY 1: shooting

In Rome, a homicide investigation is underway after a shooting occurred in the parking lot outside the Kellogg's plant. Dekembe Devion Smith, 29, has been charged with the murder of Keion Tyjuan Harper, 26. Smith faces charges of felony murder, possession of a weapon during a felony, and aggravated battery. The incident occurred following a fight between Smith and Harper, prompting Smith to call 911 and report the shooting. Despite attempts by the police and emergency medical personnel to save Harper's life, he was pronounced dead later at the hospital. This incident marks the seventh shooting death reported in Rome this year, as the city grapples with a high number of violent incidents....…..get more on this story at northwestgeorgianews.com

As of Thursday afternoon, Jones was held in the Floyd County Jail without bond.

STORY 4: SPLOST

Members of the special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) committee have commenced deliberations to determine which proposals will be included in the November ballot. The committee will meet for two more sessions to select the projects and their corresponding budgets. Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord has estimated the tax revenue to be between $85 million and $90 million over five years. The revenue distribution is based on the local option sales tax agreement, with Floyd County receiving around 53%, Rome City receiving 45.2%, and Cave Spring receiving 1.8%. Joint departments, like Rome-Floyd Fire and Parks and Recreation, will have their projects evenly split. It is essential to fully fund certain projects, such as the new Rome Police Department headquarters. The final package must be appealing to voters, who will vote on the entire proposal. Officials emphasize that this approach is fair and that a significant portion of the revenue will come from outside visitors spending money in Floyd County.

STORY 5:  Rakestraw

Robert Rakestraw, one of Rome's few remaining World War II veterans, celebrated his 100th birthday at the Parker Center. He delighted the crowd by singing an old train song accompanied by the Georgia Mountain Music Club's jam band and even danced a jig. Members of the Marine Corps League were also present, honoring Rakestraw with an award and singing the Marine Corps song. Rakestraw shared a memorable story of celebrating the end of the war, where he and his comrades joyfully yelled the news while wearing only their skivvies. Rakestraw, a former trumpet player in the Marine Corps band, served in Okinawa and Guam. He is not only an artist but also a columnist and contributor to the Rome News-Tribune. Rakestraw attributes his longevity to good genes and a healthy lifestyle.

STORY 6: Oil

Georgia's Board of Pharmacy has issued regulations that will allow independent pharmacies in the state to dispense cannabis oil to eligible patients. This move provides patients with a wider range of choices for obtaining their prescribed medicine. In 2019, Georgia legalized the cultivation of marijuana under strict supervision and the production of low-THC cannabis oil for treating various chronic illnesses. Two companies, Trulieve Georgia and Botanical Sciences LLC, have already obtained manufacturing licenses and opened dispensaries in Marietta and Macon. In addition to these dispensaries, the 2019 law permits independent pharmacies to sell cannabis oil to eligible patients. Over 100 out of 700 independent pharmacies have expressed interest in participating in the program, ensuring access to cannabis oil in communities across the state. The Board of Pharmacy is expected to adopt the rules soon, with the first licensed pharmacies anticipated to start selling cannabis oil between late August and early September. The list of qualifying diseases includes conditions like cancer, seizure disorders, AIDS, PTSD, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease.
