STORY 1: FOOTBALL: Rockmart Tops Toombs to Punch Ticket to Final Four

The Rockmart Yellow Jackets secured a spot in the Class AA semifinals after defeating No. 4 Toombs County 45-21. Senior quarterback Calliyon Thompson played a key role with two touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns. The victory marked Rockmart's first semifinal appearance since 2018. The team, currently ranked No. 6 with an 11-2 record, is eyeing a historic state title after a 72-year drought. The upcoming semifinal against No. 9 Cook will be held at Rockmart High School, providing a home-field advantage. The winner will face either Fitzgerald or Pierce County in the Class AA state championship game on December 12 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

STORY 2: Brown Sentenced to Life Without Parole For Murder of 2 Rome Sisters

Desmond Lavonta Brown has been sentenced to life without parole on Monday, for the 2020 murder of two Rome sisters. A Cherokee County, Alabama, jury found Brown guilty of capital murder on Nov. 21. Brown, along with two co-defendants, was accused of killing Vanita Richardson and Truvenia Campbell in Alabama and disposing of their bodies near Grizzard Park in Rome. The jury recommended a life sentence without parole during the sentencing phase. Brown and his co-defendants also face charges in Floyd County. One co-defendant, Devon Watts, is expected to go to trial in spring 2024, while the other, Christopher Pullen, faces a felony murder charge.

STORY 3: ‘American Pickers’ Coming to Georgia in January

The popular History Channel show "American Pickers" is set to film episodes in Georgia in January, and producers are seeking local participants. The documentary series follows skilled pickers as they search for valuable antiques, historically significant items, and unforgettable characters across America. The Pickers are looking for leads throughout the state, particularly interesting characters with fascinating items. They encourage people with unique items, stories to tell, and a willingness to sell to contact them. However, the show does not pick stores, flea markets, malls, auction businesses, or museums. Interested individuals can send details and photos to americanpickers@cineflix.com or call 646-493-2184.

STORY 4: New State Senate Map Creates Two New Black-Majority Districts

A proposed state Senate redistricting map in Georgia aims to create two additional Black-majority districts, following a federal court order. The map, released ahead of a special legislative session, designates Senate District 17 in Henry and Newton counties and Senate District 28 in Douglas and Fulton counties as majority Black. This aligns with a recent court ruling that found the previous redistricting maps violated the federal Voting Rights Act. The proposed changes aim to address the demographic shifts in metro Atlanta. The court had mandated the addition of Black-majority seats in both the Georgia House and the state's congressional delegation.

STORY 5: Rome City Commission Fines Peaches and Suspends Alcohol Licenses

The Rome City Commission has suspended the alcohol licenses at Peaches, an event venue on Broad Street, for three months and imposed a $2,000 fine. The establishment's owner, Stephanie Shaw, is accused of allowing patrons to stay and drink beyond the 2 a.m. deadline on October 22. The suspension applies to beer, wine, and liquor pouring permits. Shaw had her liquor pouring license reinstated in May after a suspension for failing to meet the 50/50 food-to-drink sales ratio. The penalty was unanimously approved by the commission, and concerns were raised by parents about underage patrons being served alcohol.
