State Rep. Doreen Carter, a Democrat from Lithonia, has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in Christian Business Management from the School of the Great Commission Bible College and Seminary. Carter expressed her humility and gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing her commitment to lifelong learning and the integration of Christian principles into business practices. She already holds a Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, and a Master of Theology. The School of the Great Commission Bible College and Seminary aims to provide Christian-based education nationally and internationally, holding accreditation from reputable educational institutions. The family of Chad Cope, who went missing in February, believes they have found his remains in the Yellow River, although the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has yet to confirm the identification. Chad's family last heard from him in late January, and after weeks of unsuccessful attempts to contact him, they filed a missing persons report in April. The family learned that deputies had been involved in a foot chase with Chad in early February, and he had allegedly jumped into the Yellow River to evade capture. Despite extensive searches and hoax calls, Chad's whereabouts remained unknown. A recent search with cadaver dogs and divers yielded potential evidence. Georgia is home to a healthy population of black bears, primarily found in the north Georgia mountains, central Georgia along the Ocmulgee River, and the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia. To ensure coexistence with bears, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources encourages residents to follow BearWise guidelines. These include staying alert and together in outdoor activities, leaving no trash or food scraps, keeping dogs leashed, camping safely, knowing how to react when encountering a bear, and carrying bear spray. BearWise is an education program that provides detailed information on living responsibly with bears. Georgia's black bear population has rebounded through wildlife management efforts, with approximately 4,100 bears statewide. For more information, visit BearWise.org...
5: Canteen
The Madison Morgan Cultural Center has received a valuable historical artifact from the Civil War—a wooden canteen intricately carved with a detailed depiction of Madison Prison. The prison, formerly the Madison Steam Mill, served as a Confederate soldiers' hospital in 1864 and a Union prison for captured officers during the Civil War. The excavation of the site in the mid-1990s revealed the existence of the prison/hospital building, and a wooden canteen with a precise carving of the facility was discovered. The canteen bears the initials J.G.B.J. and an attribution to James Green Berry Jones, a farmer and member of the 42nd Georgia Infantry. Lieutenant Ira H. Ford, a Union soldier, delicately carved his signature along with the view of the prison compound. Interestingly, both Private Jones and Lieutenant Ford suffered from illness and disability as a result of their respective incarcerations.
Story 6: H.O.F.
The Rockdale County High School Athletics Wall of Fame has selected its inaugural class of seven members. The inductees include former athletes Willie Gilstrap, Jesse Baker, Traci Waites, Grady Jarrett, and Alonzo Allen, along with coaches Cleveland Stroud and Harry Kustick. The selection committee evaluated over 60 nominations and chose these individuals based on their academic and athletic achievements, as well as their community leadership. The induction ceremony will take place before the Bulldogs' home football game on August 18. Notably, Grady Jarrett, a current athlete, has gained recognition beyond the county for his successful career as a defensive lineman in the NFL. Willie Gilstrap, who integrated the student body as the high school's first black student-athlete in 1965, holds a significant place in Rockdale's history.……….final thoughts after this
