STORY 1: Police Seek Help After Four Inmates Escape From Bibb County Detention Center
Four inmates escaped from the Bibb County Detention Center with assistance from a blue Dodge Challenger at 3 a.m. The escaped inmates are Joey Fournier, a 52-year-old White male held for murder; Marc Kerry Anderson, a 24-year-old Black male held for aggravated assault; Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, a 37-year-old Black male detained by the U.S. Marshals; and Chavis Demaryo Stokes, a 29-year-old Black male held for firearm possession and drug trafficking. STORY 2: Two Floyd County Men Arrested in Chattooga County Child Sex Sting
During "Operation Child-Proof," a three-day operation aimed at preventing child exploitation, four individuals were arrested in Chattooga County, including two from Floyd County. The arrested individuals and their charges include Bobby Leon Brock (41, Silver Creek), Micah Van Donaldson (41, Rome), Hugh Bradley Taff (67, Rockmart), and William Alexander White (30, Hixon, Tennessee). Investigators engaged with over 15 subjects on social media and internet platforms, with subjects initiating conversations believing they were speaking to minors and directing discussions toward explicit content. This operation aimed to combat the exploitation of children online, recognizing that minors sometimes access adult websites, falsely portraying themselves as older, putting them at risk of victimization, harassment, or assault.
STORY 3: Early Voting Begins Oct. 16 in Gordon County
In preparation for the local elections on November 7, early voting has commenced at the new Gordon County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office, located on the first floor of the renovated main courthouse at 100 S. Wall St. The early voting period will run to November 3, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with weekend early voting on October 21 and October 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Absentee by mail requests can be submitted until October 27. Voters can find more information on registration and voting on the Georgia Secretary of State's website.

STORY 4: Cedartown Board Recognizes Special Proclamations at October Meeting
At its October meeting, the Cedartown City Commission issued two special proclamations. The first designates October 11 as Drug Overdose Awareness Day in honor of Brent John Thomas Barrett, a local resident who succumbed to drug addiction in 2010 at the age of 22. This global awareness day aims to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders and overdoses, promote treatment, celebrate recovery, and prevent overdose deaths. In 2022, Polk County lost 18 lives to drug overdoses. The second proclamation acknowledges October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Cedartown. Our House Domestic Violence Shelter was present to accept the proclamation. Their program served numerous victims, providing shelter, legal advocacy, and outreach services in 2023. The proclamation highlights the ongoing issue of domestic violence, with Polk County 911 receiving over 1,100 calls related to domestic violence situations. The Georgia Commission on Family Violence reports that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men in Georgia will experience severe physical violence from intimate partners.
STORY 5: Calhoun's Old Christmas Tree Finds New Home
Calhoun, known for its iconic 21-foot Christmas tree made of metal spheres, replaced it with a synthetic tree in 2021. The old tree, retired and rusty, was listed on GovDeals.com for auction. Josh Barnett Productions Inc. bought it for $7,944.75. They will display it at Segra Park in Columbia, South Carolina, during the Fireflies Holiday Lights event from November 16 to December 31. Calhoun's old tree continues to spread Christmas cheer in a new home, thanks to its new owners.
