STORY 1:   Older American’s Month kicks off with Chairman/Mayor’s Walk May 2 

Newton County Senior Services is celebrating Older Americans Month in May with events highlighting how seniors “Flip the Script on Aging.” Festivities kick off May 2 with the Annual Chairman/Mayor’s Walk from the Historic Courthouse to the Josephine B. Brown Senior Center, followed by entertainment, games, and lunch. The celebration wraps up with a concert in the park at Turner Lake on May 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Director Freda Reed invites the community to honor and celebrate the achievements of Newton County’s vibrant seniors. 

STORY 2:     Morgan Multicultural Team Encourages Reading With 5K 

Morgan County High School's Multicultural Team is hosting the second annual Read and Run 5K on April 26 at Morgan County Middle School to support literacy programs, including bilingual book purchases. The event encourages families to spend quality time together outdoors and promote reading. Race day registration starts at 7:30 a.m., with a fun run at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9 a.m. Awards will follow at 10 a.m. The course runs through the school campus and nearby neighborhoods. Sign up by April 20 for a race shirt, and find more details on Facebook or runsignup.com. 

STORY 3:  Suspect who fled into lake identified 

Shawn Murphy, fleeing a traffic stop early Sunday, April 13, drowned in Salem Lake, Rockdale County. After exiting his vehicle near Old Salem and Underwood Roads, Murphy fled on foot and entered the lake to evade deputies. Despite verbal commands, he re-entered the water and eventually disappeared from view. A search, delayed by low visibility, resumed at daybreak with help from Georgia's Department of Natural Resources. Murphy's body was recovered Sunday evening around 7 p.m.

STORY 4: Dr. Bradley Rice authors definitive book on Sen. Joshua Hill 

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center will host a book launch on Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. for Dr. Bradley R. Rice’s biography, *Joshua Hill of Madison: Civil War Unionist and Georgia’s First Republican Senator, 1812-1891*. The book explores Hill’s life, including his opposition to secession, his efforts to save Madison during Sherman’s March, and his role as Georgia’s first Republican U.S. Senator. Dr. Rice will discuss his work and take audience questions at this free event, co-sponsored by local historical organizations. 

STORY 5:   Conyers native Bradley Harris named vice president of Georgia EMC 

Conyers native Bradley Harris has been promoted to vice president for community and economic development at Georgia Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). With over 20 years of experience, Harris has led Georgia EMC’s economic development team, partnering with the Georgia Department of Economic Development on projects creating thousands of jobs statewide. Praised for his dedication and expertise, Harris is active in professional organizations like the Georgia Economic Development Association and was named one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers in 2022. A Citadel graduate, Harris looks forward to advancing economic prosperity across Georgia.
