STORY 1: shots
Police in East Rome are investigating a series of incidents involving shots fired into or near homes. Two separate shootings occurred on East 19th Street and East 16th Street, with no injuries reported. Police believe the incidents are related and are following leads. Multiple spent shell casings were found near the crime scenes. The first shooting occurred at 4:12 a.m. on East 19th Street, damaging two homes. An hour later, another shooting took place on East 16th Street, with bullets striking a residence and breaking windows. Previous incidents of gunfire in the area have been reported, and a task force had been established in March to address drug and gun violence in South Rome and East Rome.…..check back for updates on this story at northwestgeorgianews.com
STORY 2: sentenced
Marlette Laishell "Lala" Smith, a woman from Rome, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by a federal court in Alabama for sex trafficking minors. Smith pleaded guilty to two counts of sex trafficking of a minor and two counts of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. She recruited two underage girls, aged 15 and 16, into prostitution after meeting them at a motel in Memphis. Smith promised them money and assistance in returning to California but instead took them to Georgia and Birmingham, where she sexually trafficked them. The case was investigated by the FBI Birmingham's Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force and the Homewood Police Department.
STORY 3: 2nd ave
A $26.1 million construction contract has been awarded to widen Second Avenue in Rome. The project includes realigning the intersection at Martha Berry/Turner McCall boulevards and widening a half-mile of road with a raised median. The contract was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., pending the notice to proceed from the Georgia Department of Transportation. However, the city of Rome is currently in the midst of a streetscape project in the River District, and officials will need to determine how to handle traffic routing with both projects underway. The Joint Services Committee, composed of city and county officials, discussed these initiatives and more at a meeting on Tuesday. The agenda also included reviewing annual operating expenses for potential projects funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), discussing shared parks and recreation services, and receiving an update on the relocation of the Rome Police Department. The next meeting of the Rome-Floyd SPLOST Committee, where proposed projects are presented, is scheduled for Thursday...…..we’ll be back in a moment.
