STORY 1: Morgan County jury finds man guilty of murder in truck stop shooting

A Morgan County jury found Charles Corbitt guilty of malice murder and felony murder in the shooting death of Taylor Dickens during a child custody exchange at a Pilot Truck Stop. The incident was captured on video surveillance, showing a confrontation between Corbitt and Dickens during the exchange. Corbitt claimed self-defense, but the prosecution argued he baited Dickens into an argument with the intent to use a .357 revolver. Dickens was shot four times, resulting in his death. Corbitt received a life sentence with the possibility of parole plus five years. The judge emphasized that Corbitt intended to use his gun.

STORY 2: Rockdale Resident Shares Concerns About Proposed Development at Potts Farm

A Rockdale County resident, Christopher Curran, is urging officials to deny rezoning for a proposed housing development by D.R. Horton near his residence in Conyers. Curran claims that the development of nearly 200 homes will exacerbate existing infrastructure issues and cause stormwater-related problems. He shared videos demonstrating how stormwater flow from neighboring properties impacts his residence during severe weather. The developer seeks rezoning from Agricultural to Conservation Residential Subdivision for the project. The Planning Commission recommended denial, citing concerns about unit numbers and water capacity. Residents, including Corliss Turner, plan to protest ahead of the Board of Commissioners meeting on January 25.

STORY 3: Advanced voting for Presidential Primary kicks off on Feb. 19

STORY 4: Rockdale County Seeks Donations to Help Homeless

The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners is seeking donations for the 2024 Point-in-Time Count to assist the homeless during the winter. They are collecting gently used coats, new hats, gloves, socks, and hygiene products until January 22. Donors can drop off items at the Planning and Development Office or the Water Resources Customer Service office in Conyers. STORY 5: NBA greats get screen time with Morgan County dairy cow

NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Kenny Smith participated in a televised segment on TNT, celebrating National Milking Day with Rosie, a show cow from Big Sandy Creek Dairy Farm in Morgan County. The Benkoski sisters, owners of the farm, traveled to Atlanta with Rosie to surprise the NBA trio on Inside the NBA with Ernie Johnson Jr. The legends were visibly nervous while milking Rosie but tasted the milk after the demonstration. The farm owners used the opportunity to educate the audience on dairy farming and milk processing. Rosie, a five-year-old Holstein, became a diva after the TV appearance.
