The battle over short-term rental regulations in Athens-Clarke County has intensified as a group of property owners is taking legal action against recent zoning ordinance amendments.

Alleging violations of property rights and open meetings laws, the lawsuit targets Mayor Kelly Girtz and district commissioners.

The contentious issue arose from complaints about noise and traffic in single-family neighborhoods.

The plaintiffs demand judicial scrutiny of the adoption process and seek a ruling ensuring constitutional zoning practices.

They challenge the definition of STRs and the lack of local impact analysis, citing concerns raised by a New York Times article.

The lawsuit, led by three LLCs and six individual owners, reflects the growing tension surrounding STR operations in the area.
