STORY 1: Cedartown Man Charged With Trafficking Meth

Previously charged with the possession of over 25 pounds of marijuana, Dishon Lamar Glanton from Cedartown now confronts further charges of meth trafficking. This follows the discovery of over 28 grams of meth in his possession. Initially, Glanton and Atlantrish R. Elkins were charged with felony marijuana trafficking following their arrest at Eastland Court Apartments. Glanton's updated charges now include felony trafficking and possession of meth, alongside misdemeanor possession of marijuana. As of the latest reports, Glanton remains detained without bond at the Floyd County Jail.

STORY 2: Police: Armuchee Pair Let Child Eat THC Gummy

Taylor Underwood, 39, and Keith Robert Lee, 33, residents of Armuchee (Ar-muh-chee), have been apprehended following an incident where they permitted a two-year-old child to ingest a THC gummy, resulting in hospitalization. The pair now face felony charges of child cruelty and meth possession after police found meth in a dresser within easy reach of three children in the home. Both Underwood and Lee are currently held without bond in the Floyd County Jail.

STORY 3: City of Calhoun Earns Excellence in Financial Reporting Recognition

At the recent council meeting on Monday night, the City of Calhoun was honored with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association. Additionally, Jacob Fox, the City Director of Finance, was awarded an individual financial achievement accolade. In other news, Kenneth Carson, a veteran officer of the Calhoun Police Department, was promoted to lieutenant colonel. The council also conducted a second reading of an ordinance aimed at amending fire protection codes with a focus on hazardous materials and implemented a temporary 90-day ban on permitting new residential developments requiring sewer lift stations. Further approvals included a pole attachment agreement for small cell technology, street closures for upcoming events, and an emergency assistance agreement. Lastly, the council greenlighted annexation and rezoning requests and scheduled the next meeting for February 26th at the Depot.

STORY 4: Georgia House Passes Solar Farms Bill

The Georgia House of Representatives has unanimously passed House Bill 300, a legislation designed to prevent solar farms from permanently scarring rural landscapes. The bill requires companies that lease land for solar farms to return it to its original state once the lease period ends. This restoration process includes the removal of solar array foundations, filling in any holes, and the extraction of cables. Additionally, companies are obliged to provide financial assurance to cover restoration costs. Although the initial proposal included a state trust fund to finance the restoration, it was eventually replaced by private sector funding. House Bill 300 is set to proceed to the Georgia Senate for further deliberation.

STORY 5: Tradition Continues With Gammage Slotting First Team of Doug Sanders Classic

The annual Doug Sanders Charity Classic, hosted by The Doug Sanders Golf Museum and The Jamie and Darcy Morris Foundation, will once again feature Cedartown's Olin Gammage and his son Beau as its first supporters - a tradition they've upheld since the tournament's inception in 2020. The previous year's event raised over $30,000, providing college scholarships and equipment for the golf teams of Cedartown High School. So far, the foundation has granted four $5,000 scholarships to graduates of Cedartown High. The tournament, held at the Cherokee Country Club, attracts golfers from various regions and pays tribute to Cedartown native and golfing icon Doug Sanders. Although team slots for this year's tournament, scheduled for May 3, have been filled, sponsorships remain available. More details can be found on dougsandersmuseum.com.
