STORY 1: CPD: Man Flashed Firearm at Youth Basketball Game

A Cohutta man, Fletcher Burkett, was arrested after allegedly brandishing a firearm at two individuals leaving a basketball game at Calhoun Middle School. The incident reportedly escalated when Burkett, asked to be quiet, became confrontational. Officials asked him to leave. Later, in the parking lot, Burkett allegedly leaned against his vehicle, displayed a revolver, and made threatening statements. He left the scene but was later arrested on charges including aggravated assault, carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, possession of a firearm during a crime, and terroristic threats. Burkett is currently in Gordon County Jail.

STORY 2: Work On New Floyd County Police HQ at former Glenwood School Progresses

Renovation plans for the former Glenwood Primary School in Armuchee, which will become the Floyd County Police Department headquarters, are progressing well, according to Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. The renovation involves adapting the 70-year-old building to current building codes, dividing classrooms into offices, and transforming the space for law enforcement use. The Floyd County Police Department and the Rome Police Department, currently sharing space at the Law Enforcement Center, will move to separate locations in the near future. The City of Rome purchased a building for RPD, while the former Glenwood school was transferred to the county by the school board.

STORY 3: Georgia Senate Passes Sports Betting Bill

The Georgia state Senate passed legislation, Senate Bill 386, to legalize sports betting, but with a major change requiring a statewide referendum on the measure. The bill, passed 35-15, designates the Georgia Lottery Corp. to oversee sports betting, awarding licenses to 16 online providers. Notably, five licenses would be granted to Atlanta's pro sports teams, while other entities like Augusta National Golf Club and the PGA would receive one license each. The bill allocates 20% of sports betting revenues to Georgia's HOPE Scholarships and pre-kindergarten programs. The move follows arguments that sports betting is already happening in Georgia without proper regulation or tax revenue.
