STORY 1: Local Gas Prices
Gas prices in Georgia have dropped below their levels from a year ago just before the midterm elections. The state's average gas price is now 9 cents lower than a week ago, 42 cents lower than a month ago, and 6 cents lower than this time last year, according to AAA. This drop is attributed to factors such as reduced demand, lower oil prices, and the suspension of the state's gas tax by Governor Brian Kemp. However, potential instability in the Middle East, particularly due to recent attacks in Israel, could impact this trend. Governor Kemp's tax suspension is expected to continue until November 11 and is saving motorists money at the pump..........…….Get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com
STORY 2: DuPont: Water pollution settlement payments to Rome should be blocked from public view
DuPont is seeking to prevent the disclosure of the amount it will pay to settle a lawsuit with the City of Rome, claiming it falls under a trade secrets exemption in Georgia's Open Records Act. DuPont's attorney argued that the company is paying more than its fair share, as they were responsible for around 10% of the chemicals introduced into the river. They fear that revealing the amount could damage their future litigation strategy. However, the judge questioned how disclosing a number in the settlement document could reveal DuPont's litigation strategy. The newspapers involved in the case argue that the settlement amount doesn't qualify for trade secret protection. Over 30 other companies have already settled with the City of Rome, and their settlement amounts have been disclosed. The judge is expected to make a ruling soon, but the case may continue with possible appeals.
STORY 3: Cochran ethics case ends as complaint dropped, superior court challenge dismissed
The ethics complaint filed against Rome City Commissioner Mark Cochran, which was related to his behavior and had been ongoing during the election year, has been dropped. This announcement came during a Rome City Commission caucus. In response, Cochran has also dropped his Superior Court challenge of the ethics process. The city and Commissioner Cochran have reached a resolution, with the city attorney set to review and propose improvements to the ethics ordinance to ensure fairness, due process, and efficiency in handling ethics complaints. Additionally, a code of conduct for city employees and commissioners will be proposed to promote mutual respect and responsible roles. Cochran, who is up for re-election, expressed relief at the dismissal of the complaint and called for necessary reforms to ensure transparency and accountability. The complaint had cited Cochran's alleged ridicule of city staff members and departments as "uncalled for and unprofessional."
