STORY 1: HOMELESS IN GWINNETT: Lack of clear data clouds scope of growing crisis in the county
Robby Workman and Faith Zilka, both previously homeless, found companionship and resilience in each other amidst life’s hardships. Robby, a former coal miner, and Faith, a couch surfer, bonded over shared struggles, including addiction, mental health challenges, and homelessness. Despite setbacks like losing housing, failed business dreams, and even jail time, they’ve built a makeshift community with others in a camp near I-85 in Norcross. Their story highlights the complexities of homelessness, the importance of human connection, and the ongoing challenges faced by those without stable housing, as they strive for dignity, support, and a second chance at life.
STORY 2: Gwinnett Police Searching For New Leads In Girl's Kidnapping Cold Case
The Gwinnett County Police Department is seeking public help in a cold case involving 15-month-old Marisa Velasco, who was kidnapped by her biological mother, Rena Velasco, during a court-approved visit on Dec. 17, 2005. Marisa, in state custody due to safety concerns, disappeared after Rena left a shelter under the pretense of visiting a clinic. Rena’s boyfriend, Vidal Cruz, reportedly fled to Mexico. Now 20 years old, Marisa’s age-progressed photos have been released. Anyone with information is urged to contact Gwinnett Police or Crime Stoppers, with rewards available for tips leading to an arrest.
STORY 3: Man Tased at Marjorie Taylor Greene Event ‘Trying to Leave,’ Attorney Says
Attorneys for Johnny Keith Williams, a Marine veteran arrested at a town hall hosted by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, are urging Cobb District Attorney Sonya Allen to drop charges of battery, obstruction, and terroristic threats. Williams’ lawyers claim he was unlawfully arrested, tased twice, and assaulted by police while attempting to leave the event peacefully. They argue the force used was excessive and politically motivated, with witnesses supporting their claims. Williams, who denies any provocation, was released on bond after two days in jail. His attorneys expect the case to be dismissed or for a jury to acquit him.

STORY 5: Gwinnett's interim superintendent wants to provide stability in uncertain times
Gwinnett County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Al Taylor has stepped into leadership during a turbulent time, following the early dismissal of his predecessor and national debates over education policies. Taylor’s focus is on creating stability, prioritizing school safety, and maintaining equity despite federal scrutiny of DEI programs. While Gwinnett plans to comply with federal laws, Taylor remains confident the district’s initiatives align with regulations. He’s overseeing plans to install weapons detection systems in schools, emphasizing community engagement and staff training. Though Taylor hasn’t confirmed if he’ll seek the permanent role, his priority is ensuring a smooth transition for the next superintendent.
