Last year, a murder investigation by the Gwinnett County Police Department led to uncovering a larger issue of human trafficking in metro Atlanta, as revealed by Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Cleo Atwater. Collaborating investigators from the police department and the Sheriff’s Office worked on both murder and suspected human trafficking angles. This investigation unveiled an organization using crimes like murder, kidnapping, assaults, and human trafficking to advance their operations. Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office aims to combat this problem by hosting a training conference for local law enforcement and prosecutors in the coming year. This initiative was discussed during the Sheriff’s Office's business plan presentation. The conference will offer highly skilled training led by law enforcement officials, survivor leaders, and victim services providers, targeting human trafficking and child exploitation cases in Gwinnett County and neighboring areas. The Sheriff's Office is committed to addressing citizen needs through forward-looking strategies.
