From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, presented by Tom Wages Funeral home. Today is Saturday june 16th, and I'm Brian Giffin
Gwinnett County residents are preparing to observe Juneteenth, a significant moment in the civil rights movement for African-Americans. Juneteenth commemorates the day slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Although it became a federal holiday in 2021, Georgia established it as a state holiday last year, and Gwinnett County quickly followed suit. This weekend, various events will be held throughout the county to celebrate Juneteenth. Lawrenceville will host a concert and a celebration at Alexander Park. Norcross will have a commemoration event at Thrasher Park and a banquet at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Sugar Hill will organize a celebration at The Bowl, while Snellville will hold a Celebrate Freedom event at Snellville Towne Green. The Duluth Library Branch will also host a Juneteenth event featuring presentations and activities. The county is coming together to honor this important milestone in the ongoing fight for equality and civil rights.
