Gwinnett County officials plan to use eminent domain to acquire two adjacent pieces of land next to the Maguire-Livsey House, a historic property in the Promised Land community that was acquired by the county six-and-a-half years ago with plans to turn it into a historical park. The Livsey family, who gave the county the house, has accused officials of lowballing them on a price to pay for the land and of trying to negotiate with Thomas Livsey, the 93-year-old unofficial "Mayor of the Promised Land," while his health was in decline. Family members see the move as an attempt to take the land from a Black family rather than paying a fair price. The fight over the land carries racial undertones.
Supporters of the family also said they are dismayed by the county's actions. Former state legislator Donna McLeod said she's disappointed in the county's Black leaders who broke color barriers when they came into their respective offices between 2018 and 2020.
