STORY 1: Gordon County Sheriff's Deputies Break Up Theft Ring, Thirteen People Arrested

Thirteen individuals have been arrested following an investigation by Gordon County Sheriff's deputies into a theft ring. The investigation began after a burglary at a turf manufacturing farm in August, leading to the recovery of stolen property worth over $55,000. The stolen items included a firearm, an all-terrain vehicle, a box truck, maintenance equipment, a zero-turn lawnmower, and more. Charges against the arrested individuals range from possession of methamphetamine to theft-related offenses, burglary, probation violations, and outstanding warrants. The comprehensive investigation involved tracking stolen vehicles, executing search warrants, and following leads to apprehending suspects connected to the theft ring.

STORY 2: A 'once in a lifetime' opportunity: Georgia panel considering the best use of tax breaks

Georgia faces a unique opportunity to restructure tax rates with a substantial fund balance, but the forthcoming legislative session is anticipated to be contentious. A Joint Tax Credit Review Panel, led by Sen. Chuck Hufstetler and Rep. Shaw Blackmon, is expected to present recommendations. The debate centers on preserving special tax breaks and finding a balance between individual and corporate tax reductions. Governor Brian Kemp has proposed accelerating income tax rate reductions, but the state's competitiveness with neighboring states, such as North Carolina, is a focal point. Concerns include reliable data, economic impact, and maintaining Georgia's quality of life amid tax restructuring.

STORY 3: State Senate Committee Approves New Georgia Congressional Map

The Georgia Senate Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee, dominated by Republicans, approved a new congressional map amid objections that it doesn't comply with a federal court order finding the current map violates the Voting Rights Act. The proposed map aims to create an additional Black-majority district, following a court order. However, critics argue it eliminates a minority-opportunity district, contradicting the court's directive. Changes to Georgia Congressional District 6 and the shift of the 7th Congressional District's racial makeup are contentious points. The proposed map faces criticism for partisan motives, including targeting Democratic U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath. The map is set for a Senate vote.

STORY 4: Cities Make Decision On Joining National PFAS Settlement

The governing boards of Cedartown and Rockmart in Georgia have voted to opt out of a national PFAS settlement offered by manufacturing companies to compensate for contaminating public drinking water. The cities aim to keep their options open for potential future litigation. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are synthetic chemicals resistant to water, grease, and heat found in various products. The cities' decision is influenced by concerns about the Coosa River Basin, potential future issues, and the inadequacy of the proposed national settlements, totaling about $12 billion, to cover removal costs and compensation. The opt-out deadline for affected entities was December 4.

STORY 5: Ashlyn’s Battle: Gordon County Woman Fighting Rare Form of Leukemia

Ashlyn Boots-Cain, a 22-year-old diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-negative B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, is undergoing treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Her initial treatment at AdventHealth Gordon in Ranger revealed low hemoglobin levels, prompting her transfer to Emory. Despite initial chemotherapy success, Ashlyn relapsed, leading to a bone marrow transplant. Her mother, Jackie Cain, quit her job to support Ashlyn during the process. Ashlyn, a nature enthusiast and aspiring performing artist, plans to volunteer at Children's Health Care of Atlanta to inspire other young cancer patients. The family encourages blood donation and bone marrow registration.
