STORY 1: GNTC Graduate Shandi Hall Named Officer of the Year
Shandi Hall, a graduate of Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC), has been named Officer of the Year for 2023 by the Catoosa County Chamber of Commerce. Hall, a graduate of GNTC's Basic Law Enforcement program, received the award in recognition of her dedication, positive attitude, and exceptional service as an officer with the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department. Hall's fellow officers nominated her for the award, emphasizing her work ethic, positive interactions with the public, and her ability to motivate her colleagues. The award reflects Hall's commitment to her new career and her pursuit of a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer.
STORY 2: Love Feast Still Seeking Donations As They Work To Feed Thousands a Thanksgiving Day Meal
The 35th annual Thanksgiving Love Feast, organized by Mount Calvary Mission Church in Rome, will take place at the Rome Civic Center on Thanksgiving Day. The event offers a free Thanksgiving dinner available for take-out to anyone in need. Over 2,000 meals are expected to be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until meals run out. This year, organizers anticipate having some dine-in space available, depending on seating availability and health department recommendations. The event has become a Rome tradition over the last 35 years, providing a warm meal to the community during the Thanksgiving holiday.
STORY 3: Six-Year-Old Girl Saves Dad By Calling 911
Autumn Adams, a six-year-old girl, exhibited remarkable bravery during a 911 call when her father, Bryan, experienced a diabetic episode and wouldn't wake up. The 911 operator, Alisha Gresham, calmly guided Autumn through the emergency. Bryan had prepared his family for such situations, practicing the protocol for calling 911 and using a code word to signal well-being. Autumn's quick thinking and clear responses ensured prompt dispatch of help. Despite her age, Autumn's composure during the emergency call and her adherence to the prepared plan demonstrated her heroism, earning her praise and a celebratory sushi dinner.

STORY 4: Georgia Unemployment Rate Held Steady in October
Georgia's unemployment rate held steady at 3.4% in October, according to the state Department of Labor. The rate remained half a percentage point below the national unemployment rate. Although the labor force and the number of employed Georgians reached all-time highs at 5.35 million and 5.17 million, respectively, the state saw a decrease of 1,100 jobs, marking the first decline since October of the previous year. Some employment sectors, such as private education and health services, as well as leisure and hospitality, achieved record-high job numbers. Initial unemployment claims rose by 3% compared to October of the previous year.
STORY 5: Mt. Olive Church Road Dam Replacement Out for Bid
Mt. Olive Church Road in Gordon County, partially closed for several years due to safety concerns, is now undergoing a bidding process for a project to address the issue. The closure was prompted by the need to replace an old makeshift dam that posed safety risks. The road closure, between B. Johnson Road and Ga. 53, was necessary due to structural issues with the dam, including cracks and significant drop-offs. The current bid seeks to address the problem area, featuring the removal of the existing dam, construction of coffer dams to protect the lakes, and other safety measures. The project is funded by the 2018 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).

STORY 6: Record 45,200 Jobs in Floyd County in October, Up 1,600 in a Year
In Floyd County, a record 45,200 people were employed last month, reflecting a surge of 1,600 positions in the past year and 300 above the September report. The boost may be attributed to the start of the Christmas hiring season as retailers bring on additional staff. However, Summit Hill Foods' cessation of operations in December at the First Avenue plant in downtown Rome may impact up to 80 employees. Jobless claims in Floyd, Bartow, and Gordon counties decreased in October compared to the same month last year and September 2023. Polk saw increases, contributing to a total of 772 claims across the counties. The regional jobs boards showed several openings, with the Rome Floyd Chamber listing 72 and the Cartersville-Bartow Chamber posting 41 openings, dominated by local colleges and governments. Georgia's unemployment rate remained at 3.4%, with the labor force and number of employed Georgians reaching all-time highs.
STORY 7: State Awards Four More Medical Cannabis Production Licenses
The Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission has awarded four additional provisional Class 2 licenses for low-THC cannabis oil production to FFD GA Holdings, TheraTrue Georgia, Natures GA, and Trevana Remedy. This expansion aims to significantly enhance access to medical cannabis for eligible patients in the state. The license recipients are permitted to grow marijuana in up to 50,000 square feet of indoor space, manufacture low-THC cannabis oil, and establish dispensaries across Georgia. The commission's decision brings the total licensed production companies to six, potentially increasing the number of dispensaries from nine to 30, making medical relief more accessible to patients with limited travel capabilities due to their medical conditions. The move follows the legalization of low-THC cannabis oil possession in 2015, with the licensing process established in 2019.
We’ll have closing comments after this.
