STORY 1: Georgia Power coal ash plan comes under fire during EPA hearing

Environmental activists in Georgia are urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency not to allow coal ash ponds at several Georgia Power coal plants to continue contaminating groundwater. Georgia Power's plan involves leaving coal ash in place at four out of ten ash ponds it plans to close by 2028, a move opposed by environmental groups. Coal ash contains harmful contaminants like mercury and arsenic that can pollute groundwater and pose health risks. The EPA issued a rule in 2015 preventing utilities from leaving coal ash in groundwater, and activists argue that Georgia Power's plan violates this rule. The EPA is currently gathering public feedback on the issue.......…….Get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com

STORY 2: Calhoun nonprofit founder arrested on sex offender registry violation

Thomas Nicholas Hallman, the founder of the Calhoun-based nonprofit Wilderness Outdoor MENistry, has been arrested for sex offender registry violations. Hallman, a registered sex offender, failed to comply with requirements, including registering his nonprofit organization with the Gordon County Sheriff's Office and staying away from childcare facilities, churches, schools, or businesses within 1,000 feet of those places, which is mandated by Georgia state law. Hallman had previously pleaded guilty to child pornography charges in 2017 and was sentenced to imprisonment followed by supervised release. He was released on bond after his recent arrest.

STORY 3: GNTC English classes help nuns bridge language barrier in Cedartown

Three members of the Sisters Poor of Jesus Christ, originally from Brazil and Paraguay, have been living in Cedartown, Georgia, as missionaries to the homeless and poor for about 18 months. They are learning English as a Second Language through Georgia Northwestern Technical College's Adult Education program to better communicate with the local community. In addition to their outreach efforts, they also make crafts and candles to support their ministry. The sisters prefer in-person ESL classes as it allows them to meet new people, learn from each other, and better integrate with the community. They find Cedartown similar to their hometowns in some aspects but also appreciate the convenience and independence of living in the United States.

STORY 4: Darlington SAT scores top local, state and national averages

Darlington School's students achieved SAT scores that surpassed local, state, and national averages, according to data from The College Board. The school's 133 seniors achieved a total mean score of 1122, exceeding the state average of 1045 and the national average of 1003. Darlington's students also outperformed their peers in the area. This success is attributed to the school's strong college-preparatory curriculum and its encouragement of students to challenge themselves academically. The school's curriculum prepares students well for both the SAT and ACT exams, and colleges typically consider these standardized test scores as part of their admissions process.

STORY 5: City school board recognizes Paul Campbell Day

Calhoun City Schools held its monthly school board meeting, during which they celebrated the legacy of longtime staff member Paul Campbell, who served the school for 56 years and positively impacted many students and staff. They also recognized Calhoun High School's AP Scholars. The board approved a nurse services agreement with Gordon County, where the county will provide $34,125 in funds to support the school nurse program for the 2023-24 school year. Additionally, overnight and out-of-state field trips for various school groups were approved. Upcoming events include National School Principals Month and Fall Break in October.
