STORY 1: Widespread Flu Activity in Georgia: Protect Yourself and Prevent the Spread of Flu
Flu activity is widespread in Georgia, with the current flu report indicating the highest level of activity. The Georgia Department of Public Health emphasizes the importance of getting a flu shot, urging everyone over six months to do so for personal protection and to safeguard those more vulnerable. The vaccine can reduce the severity and risk of complications, lowering hospitalization rates. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. High-risk groups include the elderly, those with chronic conditions, pregnant women, and young children. Flu vaccines are widely available, and preventive measures like handwashing and staying home when sick are recommended. Antiviral drugs may be prescribed in certain cases.
STORY 2: McDaniel Named Rome's Mayor, Bojo Named Mayor Pro Tem
In a unanimous vote, the Rome City Commission appointed Commissioner Craig McDaniel as the mayor of the City of Rome for 2024. McDaniel expressed gratitude and emphasized the honor and challenges of the role. Commissioner Jim Bojo was chosen as the mayor pro tem. McDaniel aims for a productive commission and hopes for positive coverage in the media. This marks McDaniel's second term as mayor, serving as the city's representative and commission chair. The commission also reappointed Sammy Rich as the city manager for the tenth year. They approved a North Rome redevelopment zone and a tax allocation district (TAD) with some dissent regarding the TAD's size and impact on development. McDaniel plans to present a revised code of conduct and ethics for commissioners in the next meeting on Jan. 22.

STORY 4: Crews Begin Demolition of Peek Park Playground
Crews swiftly dismantled Cedartown's Peek Park playground at the start of the year to make way for a new, modern play area. The wooden structure, crafted through a community volunteer effort almost 25 years ago, was closed to the public a week prior to its removal. The city initiated an $800,000 fundraising campaign for the new playground, encouraging contributions through the sale of fence pickets and bricks, with a deadline of January 10. Volunteers are sought for the construction, scheduled for March 20, with no prior experience required, as experienced team leaders and supervisors will provide guidance. Further details can be found on PlayatPeek.org.
STORY 5: Jack's Family Restaurants Targets Calhoun Location
Alabama-based fast-food chain Jack's Family Restaurants is set to open a new location in Gordon County, with a tentative opening date in late summer/early fall 2024. An online job posting for a General Manager position in Calhoun indicates that training for the role will take place at a nearby operational Jack's location. The company already has multiple locations in Georgia, including Dalton, Rome, Summerville, Ft. Oglethorpe, Cedartown, and Carrollton. The specific location for the new restaurant in Calhoun is yet to be confirmed, but sources suggest a possible Highway 53 location near the interstate.
