STORY 1: Freedom Seekers Kick-Start Annual Toys for Tots Fundraising Drive

The Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club initiated the annual Toys for Tots program, contributing both toys and a $16,000 check to the drive. Club treasurer Shane Wright presented the check to Glenda Almand, Volunteer of the Year for Toys for Tots, emphasizing the increasing participation and sponsorship in the event. The motorcycle club, joined by other groups like the Roman Jeep Brigade, raised funds through sponsor donations and expressed gratitude for the support. Toys for Tots, led by organizer Linda Hatcher, aims to serve over 1,400 families and distribute 13,000 toys to about 3,500 children this year, with the Freedom Seekers' active involvement being crucial to its success.

STORY 2: Calhoun Middle School Students Start Coat Drive

Two thirteen-year-old students from Calhoun Middle School, Marley Roach and Janel Reyes, initiated a coat drive after noticing some students without jackets during the colder weather. The girls started the drive to ensure that everyone has access to warm clothing. They have already received a good number of donated coats and jackets and hope to expand the project to other schools and the broader community in the future. Roach and Reyes are considering careers in medicine, with Reyes aspiring to be a pediatrician and Roach aiming for anesthesiology, emphasizing their commitment to helping others. The coat drive has officially concluded at Calhoun Middle School, but donations can still be dropped off at the main office.

STORY 3: Man texted 'I'm kill you for real' to his mother

A 32-year-old Rome man, Alexander Lawrence Clayton, allegedly sent threatening texts to his mother on September 5, stating, "I'm kill you for real" and "I am going to kill as many people as I can." The mother provided copies of the messages to the police. Clayton, who was living with his mother at the time, was arrested in Carroll County and transported to the Floyd County Jail on Friday. As of Monday, he remains in custody without bond.

STORY 4: Volunteers Help Rehab Historic Goodyear Footbridge in Cedartown

Keep Polk Beautiful, in collaboration with dedicated volunteers and skilled craftsmen, revitalized the footbridge in the Goodyear Mill Village area. The project involved an eight-hour effort to replace floor joists and install new pressure-treated wooden boards along the 135-foot span over Cedar Creek. This initiative represents the first phase of a broader improvement project for the Goodyear Park vicinity. The organization continues to accept donations for the ongoing project through a GoFundMe account. For more details, interested individuals can visit Keep Polk Beautiful on Facebook.

STORY 5: Caretaker accused of stealing from elderly person

A man entrusted with the care of an elderly individual is accused of stealing thousands of dollars over a two-month period. David Allen Jenkins, 31, faces charges of felony exploitation of an elderly person. Jenkins, acting as the caretaker, allegedly stole money through online purchases, cash advances, and manipulating various banking apps. The undisclosed amount was taken by linking to online banking apps and using the Cash App. Jenkins was arrested on Friday and is held at the Floyd County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

STORY 6: Doug Collins to Lead Georgia Chapter of National Think Tank

Former U.S. Rep. Doug Collins will lead the newly established Georgia chapter of the America First Policy Institute, a national think tank. Collins, a Republican, served in Georgia's 9th Congressional District from 2013 to 2021 and was a strong defender of former President Donald Trump. The America First Policy Institute, closely tied to Trump, aims to promote policies that address issues like safety, opportunity, and freedom. Collins expressed his commitment to using his experience as a lawyer, former congressional member, and veteran to contribute to the institute's efforts in bettering the lives of Georgians. The organization is led by Brooke Rollins, a former Trump White House domestic policy adviser.

STORY 7: Sports Betting Best Odds for Legalizing Gambling in Georgia

After years of failed attempts to legalize gambling in Georgia, sports betting appears to be the front-runner for approval in 2024. Despite previous setbacks, sports betting is seen as the most popular option among sports betting, casinos, and horse racing. The Metro Atlanta Chamber, backed by Atlanta's professional sports teams, supports sports betting, emphasizing its potential for driving fan engagement and generating tax revenue. The tax revenue would contribute to Georgia's HOPE Scholarships and Pre-Kindergarten programs. While some lawmakers advocate combining sports betting, casinos, and horse racing in a single constitutional amendment, others believe focusing on sports betting may garner more support.

We’ll have closing comments after this.
