STORY 1: Report: Floyd County Man Jumps In Coosa River To Flee Police

A Floyd County man, Matthew James Johnson, is facing charges after allegedly jumping into the Coosa River following a traffic stop for failing to maintain a lane. He is charged with misdemeanor obstruction, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, failure to maintain lane, and tampering with evidence. Johnson reportedly admitted to jumping into the river to dispose of approximately nine ounces of meth, though he is not currently charged with that specific crime.

STORY 2: Sheriff's Office Investigating Gordon County Mail Thefts

Detectives from the Gordon County Sheriff's Office are investigating recent mail thefts in the Curryville community. Two separate reports were received about thefts from mailboxes on Rock Creek Road and Battle Road. A resident on Rock Creek Road observed a suspicious white vehicle stopping at his mailbox and taking mail, while another resident on Battle Road reported a theft of mail and captured security camera footage of a white, late-model Audi vehicle. Detectives are seeking public assistance in identifying the vehicle involved in the thefts, as it was seen in the area during the incidents.

STORY 4: Planning commission backs proposed 'hemp farm' site in Rome

The Rome-Floyd Planning Commission unanimously recommended the approval of a rezoning request for a proposed hemp-growing facility on Center Street, which would share a building with the Rome Athletic Club. The property owner, Charles Craton, seeks to rezone it from Community Commercial to Light Industrial for the hemp business, managed by his daughter, Calley Craton. The facility would be used for hemp growing and drying, with processing conducted at another location. Calley Craton believes this would be Floyd County's first hemp growing operation. The Rome city commissioners will make the final decision after a public hearing on December 18.

STORY 5: County Approves Student Plan to Honor Late Tennis Coach Jeffrey Gallman

Sonoraville High School tennis players, who previously advocated for upgrades to a local tennis facility, have received unanimous approval from the Gordon County Board of Commissioners for a plan to honor their late coach, Jeffrey Gallman. The players proposed dedicating a plaque at the Gordon County Parks and Recreation tennis facility to commemorate Gallman's contributions, who continued coaching despite battling cancer. The precision tooled bronze plaque, estimated to cost $500, will be funded through community donations. The county will assist in coordinating the purchase and mounting of the plaque. The players also seek assistance for future upgrades at the complex.

STORY 6: AdventHealth Redmond EMS Donates Ambulance to Polk County College and Career Academy

AdventHealth Redmond EMS has donated a decommissioned ambulance to the Polk County College and Career Academy, providing students in the Emergency Medical Response program with hands-on training. The ambulance will enhance the students' learning experience, allowing them to work on an actual vehicle rather than in a lab setting. Marty Robinson, Director of AdventHealth Redmond EMS, emphasized the importance of supporting the training of future EMS professionals, many of whom will serve in Polk County. The ambulance was decommissioned due to unsuitability for emergency response, making it an ideal instructional vehicle for the program.

STORY 7: Catoosa County to Hold Election to Continue 1% Sales Tax

Catoosa County is set to conduct an election seeking citizens' approval to continue the 1% SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) and establish agreements with Ringgold and Fort Oglethorpe for the use and distribution of 2024 SPLOST funds. The 2024 SPLOST, if approved, aims to collect up to $96 million over six years for capital projects supporting public safety, infrastructure, equipment, and building needs. The intergovernmental agreement outlines the distribution of funds, with 80.14% allocated to Catoosa County, 14.83% to Fort Oglethorpe, and 5.03% to Ringgold.
