STORY 1: Dalanna Bailey Convicted of Murder in 2020 Shooting

Dalanna Bailey has been found guilty by a Newton County Superior Court jury for the murder of 27-year-old Lapeachah (La-pee-chah) Nash and the shooting of another person. The incident took place in May 2020, when Bailey confronted her child's father at her apartment complex, resulting in a tense altercation. Armed with a firearm, Bailey escalated the situation by firing multiple shots at Nash's car as she tried to escape. Unfortunately, Nash succumbed to her injuries. Bailey, having fled the scene with her child, was later arrested by authorities. She was convicted on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault. Her sentencing is set for March 7.

STORY 2: 'Let the good times roll'

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center recently hosted its inaugural "A MidWinter's Night Dream: Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball" at the transformed Hall on Foster Street, a former gymnasium. The event saw more than 250 elegantly dressed attendees, donning intricate masks, and reveling in the festivities. Highlights of the event included the coronation of Mardi Gras King and Queen, honors bestowed upon Zeb Grant and Rachel Kinsaul. Volunteers went to great lengths to turn the venue into an enchanting winter wonderland, complete with delicate lighting and a grand gambling tent. This gathering marks the start of what is set to become a highly awaited annual social event in Madison.

STORY 3: Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Continues Bonds With Youth Through SAL Program

The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has launched its yearly cooking initiative, aimed at fostering constructive relationships between young people and law enforcement. The program, part of the Sheriff's Activities League (SAL), runs every Saturday in February and March and focuses on athletics, academics, awareness, accountability, and advocacy. Under the guidance of Cheif Sam Dobie, children aged 7 to 12 learn about kitchen safety, food preparation, and engage in hands-on cooking activities. The program strives to instill healthy habits, good citizenship, and STEM skills among participants. With no participation fee, interested children can enroll for the upcoming session set to begin in April. This initiative underscores community involvement and showcases the Sheriff's Office's dedication to youth development.

STORY 4: VFW names 'Patriot's Pen' essay winner for Morgan County

Every year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organizes the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program. This nationwide initiative invites middle school students to delve into American history and its significance in today's society through the power of writing. The recent contest saw Avery Howell, an eighth grader, clinching first place at both the county and district levels in Georgia's VFW District 4. The district commander honored Howell's achievement with a cash prize and formal recognition. Camala Cunningham, a contest judge from VFW Post 2557, lauded Howell's essay for its patriotic sentiments and inspirational tone, noting her commendable representation of Morgan County and the local VFW Post. The VFW is a nonprofit entity that serves eligible veterans and military service members, providing a range of services and opportunities.

STORY 5: Rockdale Animal Services Launches 'Smooch a Pooch' Initiative to Boost Animal Adoption

Rockdale County Animal Services, based in Conyers, has launched the 'Smooch a Pooch' initiative, which runs until February 17th. The program offers a $14 discount on dog adoptions, with an aim to increase adoption rates during the typically slower early months of the year. Deputy Director Meredith Barnum is optimistic that this initiative will emulate the success seen in December, when an average of 75 animals found new homes. However, January saw a substantial decrease, with only 41 adoptions. The agency's recent procurement of a new adoption trailer is set to enable more adoption events, providing increased visibility and comfort for the animals. Residents interested in adopting can visit the shelter located on Rockbridge Road or browse through the selection of adoptable pets on their website.
