STORY 1: North Georgia Goodwill Receives $300K Grant from Coca Cola Foundation To Empower Women

Goodwill of North Georgia has received a $300,000 grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation to assist women in gaining access to non-traditional industries. This funding will allow the organization to provide free workforce training programs for occupations where women are less represented, such as construction, maintenance, logistics, and IT.

Since 2020, there has been an 84% increase in women's enrollment in these programs. Goodwill expects this trend to continue over the next five years. The program is designed to offer tailored support in response to the disproportionate impact on women in certain industries in recent years. It includes career services, physical conditioning, and education on workplace culture and rights.

STORY 2: Resolution To Rename Federal Building In Rome After Late Judge Harold Murphy Passes

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's proposed legislation to dedicate the federal building in Rome to the late U.S. District Court Judge Harold L. Murphy has been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives. House Resolution 532 pays tribute to Judge Murphy's extensive service and notable contributions to the field of law.

Born in Georgia in 1927, Judge Murphy held numerous roles throughout his life, including serving as a Navy serviceman, a state representative, and ultimately, a federal judge for a span of 45 years. Known for his quick wit, equitable rulings, and unwavering dedication, Judge Murphy's influence reaches far beyond Georgia, earning him numerous accolades and recognition.

The resolution is now headed to the U.S. Senate for review and approval.

STORY 3: Jacquelyn Beck to Represent GNTC in Regional GOAL Competition

Jacquelyn Beck, a Health Care Assistant student, and former U.S. Marine at Georgia Northwestern Technical College has been chosen to represent the institution in the 2024 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership regional competition. Beck's nomination by her instructor, Jennifer Stephenson, was based on her resilience and leadership skills.

Despite dealing with personal hurdles, Beck flourished in the Medical Assisting program, earning gold at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. She is currently employed at Harbin Clinic Immediate Care and is pursuing a career in nursing. Beck attributes her achievements to GNTC and aspires to continue making contributions to the healthcare sector.

Should she be selected as a regional GOAL winner, Beck will then advance to the state-level competition.

STORY 4: Former County Commissioner Scotty Tillery honored with heartfelt proclamation

The Polk County Board of Commissioners paid tribute to the late Scotty Tillery, a former commissioner who died in January, by designating Wednesday, March 6, as "Scotty Tillery Remembrance Day." Tillery, who served two terms and held the position of a Cedartown City Commissioner, was honored for his devotion and leadership across various county-benefiting projects.

The proclamation underscored his advocacy for both residents and employees, especially through his roles as committee chairperson. Chairman Hal Floyd, along with other commissioners, lauded Tillery's contributions, sharing personal anecdotes and highlighting his profound influence on the community.

Tillery's wife, Ann Marie Mullen Tillery, was presented with a framed copy of the proclamation and a special eternal lantern in memory of her husband.

STORY 5: Senators question economic development chief on delayed EV plant

Rivian has put on hold its plans for the construction of a new $5 billion plant situated east of Atlanta. This decision has been met with disappointment by top economic development officials in Georgia, although they remain hopeful that the company will meet its commitments to the state. The proposed plant near Covington was projected to create 7,500 jobs.

However, Rivian has announced its intent to manufacture its new R2 midsize SUV model at an already established plant in Illinois. In an attempt to secure the deal, Georgia and the local development authority had offered Rivian incentives totaling $1.5 billion. Despite the postponement, Rivian has made two tax payments amounting to $3 million, with the majority being directed to local school systems.

According to an agreement made in 2022, Rivian is obligated to realize at least 80% of its investment and job commitments by the culmination of 2030. State officials anticipate that Rivian's plans for the site will be clarified well in advance of this deadline.
