STORY 1: Cartersville Teacher Charged with Sexual Exploitation of Children
On October 20, the Cartersville Police Department began an investigation into a possible sexual assault involving a Cartersville High School student and a teacher. Following a week-long joint investigation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Mark Mathison of Cartersville was arrested. Mathison was charged with felony improper sexual contact by an employee, felony sexual exploitation of children, and misdemeanor obscene telephone contact. He was held at the Bartow County jail pending a bond hearing. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the Criminal Investigative Division of the Cartersville Police Department.
STORY 2: Rome Man Charged With Aggravated Cruelty To Animals
A Rome man is facing multiple aggravated cruelty to animals charges after police say he used zip ties on the tails of multiple puppies in an attempt to dock their tails, reports state. According to Floyd County Jail reports: Twyford Redd Hamil, 56, of a Rogers Road address is charged with felony cruelty to animals for "causing severe prolonged physical pain". When the zip ties were removed, the dogs screamed and hollered, appearing to be in pain.
STORY 3: Microsoft To Invest $1 Billion In Data Center in Floyd County
Microsoft has announced a $1 billion investment in a data center campus called "Project Firecracker" on a 347-acre property in Rome, Georgia. The project will support the company's cloud technologies and Azure business. It is expected to create 150 new jobs. Microsoft will purchase the property for $40,000 per acre, and the Rome Floyd County Development Authority will issue industrial revenue bonds and a 12-year partial tax abatement to facilitate the project. Construction of the data center is tentatively expected to be completed in 2027-28.

STORY 4: Two Catoosa County Schools Recognized as Georgia Literacy Leaders by Georgia Department Of Education
Cloud Springs Elementary and West Side Elementary in Catoosa County, Georgia, have been recognized as Georgia Literacy Leaders by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) for their significant growth in third-grade reading achievement. These schools were among 84 in the state to receive recognition for their growth. To be eligible for the award, schools must either have 90% or more of their third-grade students reading at or above grade level or show a 15% or higher increase in the percentage of third-grade students reading at or above grade level from the previous year. The GaDOE's Literacy Leader program aims to improve literacy outcomes for all students.
STORY 5: Rockmart to Receive Georgia Council for the Arts Grants for Theatre and Public Art
The city of Rockmart, Georgia, has been awarded two grants totaling over $18,000 to enhance its cultural and artistic offerings. A $15,113 Cultural Facilities grant will be used to upgrade equipment at The Rockmart Theatre, including curtains, sound equipment, and stage lighting. An additional $3,600 Vibrant Communities grant will enable the commissioning of a public art installation at the historic Lester House. The public art installation will feature a tree carving that reflects Rockmart's unique history and character. These grants aim to support cultural and artistic initiatives while also contributing to the improvement of community facilities.
