STORY 1: POLICE: Cartersville High Teacher Had 'Inappropriate Relationship' With a Student

John Paul Snead, a teacher at Cartersville High School hired in 2019 to establish the Junior ROTC program, has been charged with felony sexual assault by a teacher/school administrator and sexual battery, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a student. Snead, 53, was arrested and booked into Bartow County Jail. The Cartersville Police initiated an investigation after receiving a report about the suspected relationship in mid-March. Snead, identified as a sergeant first class with 28 years of service in the Army and National Guard before retiring in 2017, faces ongoing investigation and anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the criminal investigative division.

STORY 2: Addy’s Law Passes Georgia General Assembly

"Addy's Law," a bill aiming to increase penalties for drivers who pass stopped school buses, passed the Georgia General Assembly and awaits Gov. Brian Kemp's approval. Named after Adalynn Pierce, an 8-year-old struck by a car while boarding a school bus, the law mandates harsher fines and penalties for violators. Key provisions include charging offenders with a high and aggravated misdemeanor, increasing fines, and allowing law enforcement to notify insurance companies of violations. Introduced by Rep. Lauren Daniel, the bill aims to prevent reckless driving near school buses and raise awareness about the issue. For more details, visit the Georgia General Assembly website.

STORY 3: Inmates Charged With Conspiracy To Smuggle Items Into Prison

Two individuals face charges for plotting to smuggle contraband into the Floyd County Prison in separate incidents. Terry Lee Warren, 51, arranged to bring in cigarettes, tobacco, marijuana, and methamphetamine, leading to charges of felony conspiracy and possession of unauthorized items. Chansler Gene Jordan, 31, allegedly conspired with inmates and outsiders to sneak in meth, marijuana, and tobacco, facing charges of possession, gang activity, conspiracy, and facilitating a felony. The contraband was intercepted in both cases, with Warren's stash found at a cemetery and Jordan's hidden under a tractor. Both men are currently held in jail without bond.

STORY 4: Marjorie Taylor Greene Calls for Resignation of Georgia GOP Vice Chair

Brian Pritchard, the Georgia Republican Party first vice chair, refuses to resign despite calls from within his party, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene cited Pritchard's felony conviction for voter fraud and false claims about the 2020 election. Pritchard, convicted of voting illegally while on probation for forgery, faces public reprimand and fines. He has promoted voter fraud conspiracy theories despite his legal troubles. The controversy stems from his voter registration in 2008, while still on probation. Pritchard denies intentional wrongdoing, stating he believed his probation had ended. Despite the scandal, he aims to leverage grassroots conservatism for election integrity, according to a 2023 questionnaire.

STORY 5: Internet Trade Group Urges Veto of Age-Verification Mandate for Social Media Access

A trade association representing internet companies is urging Gov. Brian Kemp to veto Senate Bill 351, which mandates social media platforms to verify the age of users. The bill, aimed at protecting minors from cyberbullying, was championed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and sponsored by Sen. Jason Anavitarte. However, Carl Szabo of NetChoice argues the mandated age verification is unconstitutional and suggests focusing on online literacy instead. Supporters cite studies showing the dangers of social media, especially for young girls. SB 351 would require age verification for users under 16, but critics raise concerns about its potential impact on privacy and free speech.

STORY 6: GNTC Earns 2024-25 Military Friendly School Gold Designation

Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) has achieved the 2024-25 Military Friendly School Gold designation, an improvement from its Silver designation in the previous year. This recognition places GNTC within 10% of the 10th-ranked organization in the category of small community colleges. The designation is based on evaluations using public data sources and a proprietary survey, with over 1,800 schools participating and 537 earning special awards. GNTC's dedication to providing resources and services to military students and veterans contributed to its achievement. With over 240 military students served in the past year, GNTC offers specialized support services, financial aid benefits, and credit for military training. The Military Friendly designation underscores GNTC's commitment to serving the military community and promoting positive outcomes for student veterans.

STORY 7: Rome Woman Accused Of Threatening People With A Pistol

Traiesha Lynnea Patterson, 33, from Rome, is facing felony aggravated assault charges for allegedly pointing a handgun at multiple individuals during a disturbance on Reservoir Street Saturday night. The incident occurred during a gathering to mourn the loss of a child but escalated when Patterson emerged from an apartment, reportedly complaining about noise, and brandishing a black pistol. Patterson remains in Floyd County Jail with bail set at $11,200.

We’ll have closing comments after this.
