STORY 1: Calhoun National Guard Unit Activated for Deployment

Local troops from the Georgia Army National Guard's 1st Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment, based in Calhoun, are preparing for an overseas deployment to Kosovo early next year. Approximately 200 soldiers from units in Calhoun, Dalton, Cedartown, and Canton have been activated. As part of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, they will undergo stateside pre-deployment training before heading to Kosovo as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Kosovo Force (KFOR). The mission focuses on peacekeeping amid ongoing tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. The deployment is expected to last around eight months, with various tasks in different locations.

STORY 2: GDOT awards guardrail and paving contracts for Floyd and Polk counties

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded contracts exceeding $8 million for road improvement projects in Floyd and Polk counties. In Floyd County, the project involves the installation or upgrading of guardrails around the Ledbetter Interchange on U.S. 411 and Turner McCall Boulevard. Gracie Gray Contractors Inc. won the contract for $1,983,319. In Polk County, the largest contract worth $6,109,946 is for resurfacing U.S. 27 east of Cedartown between Stephens and Cason roads, aiming to improve pavement preservation. Northwest Georgia Paving Inc. secured the contract. Both projects are expected to enhance roadway safety and conditions.

STORY 3: Dawgs 4 Dogs Donates Money to Cedartown-Polk County Humane Society

The Cedartown High School football team collaborated with SellWithShort Real Estate Group during the season to support the Cedartown-Polk County Humane Society. SellWithShort pledged to donate $20 for each touchdown the Bulldogs scored during the regular season. The football team scored a total of 38 touchdowns, resulting in a donation of $760 to the humane society. The initiative reflects a community partnership between the football team and the real estate group to contribute to the local humane society's welfare efforts.

STORY 4: Georgia Again Collecting Gasoline Tax

Georgia's temporary suspension of the gasoline tax, which was reinstated in September, has expired as of November 29. Governor Brian Kemp and the General Assembly decided not to extend the suspension, and the state Department of Revenue will resume collecting 29 cents per gallon from motorists. The decision comes as fuel prices in Georgia have fallen to an average of $2.79 per gallon, the third-lowest in the nation according to AAA. With the state enjoying a substantial budget surplus, the temporary suspension was feasible, but the recent significant drop in prices influenced the decision not to continue the suspension at this time.

STORY 5: Covid Claims 468th Floyd Resident Since Pandemic Began in March 2020

In the past seven days, a resident of Floyd County, Georgia, succumbed to COVID-19, marking the first death from the virus in Northwest Georgia in a month. Since March 2020, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 468 Floyd County residents, constituting almost a third of the 1,487 deaths in the region. Another 282 deaths in the region are attributed to causes with "probable" ties to the virus. The latest weekly data reports a combined 57 new COVID-19 cases in Floyd, Bartow, Gordon, Polk, and Chattooga counties. Health officials are closely monitoring the latest variant, BA.2.86, which is spreading in the Northeast and along the West Coast, but it is not driving increases in infections or hospitalizations in the United States, according to the CDC.

STORY 6: Summit Hill Sells 'Wet,' 'Dry' Brands in Series of Deals; No Changes in Lindale Operation

Major changes are occurring around the former Southeastern Mills, now operating under the Summit Hill Foods banner. EagleTree Capital has acquired Summit Hill Foods, retaining the "wet products" business and the corporate name and operations, including the Lindale logistics center. Mennel Milling Co. purchased the commercial dry mix business and production equipment, moving operations to Ohio and North Carolina. Homegrown Family Foods acquired the branded dry mix business, including Southeastern Mills Gravy & Bakery Mixes, Shore Lunch Dry Soup & Breading Mixes, Crockery Gourmet Seasoning Mixes, and Blue Seal & Rome Beauty Flour and Cornmeal. The Lindale campus remains intact under new ownership.

STORY 7: Ringgold Store Serves Up Freeze Dried Candy And Treats; It’s Crunchier and Tastier, Owner Says

North Georgia Candy Company and Freeze Dried Treats in Ringgold specializes in freeze-drying candy and desserts, altering the texture to make them crunchy instead of chewy. The store, open for about a month, donated a gift basket to Catoosa County Communities in Schools and conducted a taste test for teachers. The freeze-drying process, which fascinated the owner Dana Alfred since childhood, takes four to 30 hours. Alfred has experimented with different candies and desserts, discovering what works well with freeze-drying, and currently offers 60 varieties of freeze-dried treats. The store also provides custom orders, special Christmas packaging, and gift cards.

We’ll have closing comments after this.
