STORY 1: Calhoun Arbor Day Event Volunteers Distribute 4,000 Trees

Keep Calhoun Gordon Beautiful (KCGB) organized a successful Arbor Day event in Calhoun, Gordon County, where over 4,000 trees were given away to locals.

The event saw participation from numerous volunteers and local organizations, including the Calhoun Woman’s Club and Sonoraville High FFA. Arborists were on hand to assist visitors in choosing suitable tree seedlings for their landscapes.

The event, which marked Calhoun's 31st year as a designated Tree City USA, was possibly the largest Arbor Day turnout in the state, showcasing the community's commitment to environmental conservation.

STORY 2: Kemp Announces Additional Federal Pandemic Relief for Crime Victims

Georgia's Governor Brian Kemp has allocated an additional $26 million in federal pandemic relief funds to the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council's Victim's Services grant program.

This follows a previous addition of $13.2 million in December, bringing the total funding for the council to $94.2 million. The grants will aid various programs, including domestic violence shelters and human trafficking programs, helping them recover from the pandemic's economic impact.

The funds will be used for a range of critical services such as housing assistance, legal aid, and employment services, enabling continued support for over 200 nonprofits serving crime victims in Georgia.

STORY 3: Georgia Lawmakers Take Up Community Solar Bill

Georgia lawmakers have begun discussions on a bill that would allow Georgia Power customers to buy electricity from third-party solar energy providers. House Bill 1152 permits customers to subscribe with community solar providers for projects producing up to six megawatts of power.

However, the bill is limited to Georgia Power customers as the credits they would receive are to be determined by the state Public Service Commission, which does not regulate other utilities in the state. Despite Georgia ranking in the top 10 states for large-scale solar projects, it lags in smaller distributed generation projects.

The bill aims to address this imbalance. Critics, including Georgia Power and the state's electric membership cooperatives, argue there is no energy shortage in Georgia that the bill needs to address and express concerns about potential cost shifts.

STORY 4: Airport security dog sniffed out something unusual in a passenger's luggage

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection dog at Boston Logan Airport detected mummified monkeys in a passenger's luggage returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The traveler, who reported his luggage contained dried fish, stated the monkeys were for personal consumption.

Importing raw or minimally processed wild animal meat, known as "bushmeat", is prohibited in the U.S due to disease risks, including Ebola.

While no charges were filed, all the luggage was seized and the nearly 9 pounds of bushmeat were marked for destruction by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

STORY 5:

Northwest Georgia is experiencing an economic boom driven by major investments. Solarcycle's $344 million solar glass manufacturing center, a partnership between Qcells and Solarcycle, and Microsoft's deal with Qcells for solar cell supply are contributing to the region's growth.

Furthermore, a $5 billion investment by SK On and Hyundai in an electric vehicle battery plant is accelerating this expansion. The region's hospitality and retail sectors are also growing with new restaurants and the upcoming Cloudland Hotel at McLemore Resort. However, traffic safety is a concern due to an increase in fatalities despite fewer accidents overall.

STORY 7: Leah McGrath

And now here is Bruce Jenkins’ conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on food longevity.
