The burning of the piano, a long-standing tradition that started with the Royal Air Force, was recently held at Dobbins Air Reserve Base to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the 700th Airlift Squadron. The ceremony is also meant to honor fallen airmen, particularly those who have given their lives in support of the squadron's missions through the years. The tradition is said to have originated from two stories related to the RAF during World War II. The controlled burn is conducted with utmost caution to minimize risks and maximize safety. The event at Dobbins was the first of its kind and is planned to be an annual tradition commemorating those who lost airmen from Dobbins who died in the previous year.
A woman accused of shoplifting, Laytosha Virgil, escaped into a storm drain during a hearing in the Cobb County Superior Court’s mental health court. She had been out on a $5,720 bond for felony shoplifting when she suddenly left the courthouse and was found in a storm drain. Law enforcement went through about 100 feet of narrow drainage to secure Virgil, who refused to leave, and bring her back above ground. Virgil was taken into custody around 3 p.m. and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and medical care. Thursday was the second time in two months Virgil was caught trying to hide from authorities.
