Story 1: Woman Accused of Running over Man off Powers Ferry Road

Atlanta resident, Jimesha Jones, 28, is reported to have allegedly struck a man with her 2016 Dodge Journey following a heated argument. The incident is said to have occurred in the early hours of February 4, between 3 to 3:24 a.m., near Powers Ferry Road and I-285. Reports suggest that the confrontation was preceded by alcohol consumption at a local restaurant.

The intensity of the vehicle's acceleration led to it colliding with another car, critically injuring the victim. Cobb Police apprehended Jones at 8 a.m. on the same day, charging her with aggravated assault with an intent to murder. Following her booking into Cobb County Adult Detention Center, she was released on a $25,000 bond.

Story 2: Georgia Residents Average the 6th Least Disposable Income in the U.S.

In contrast to gloomy predictions, the U.S. economy experienced growth in 2023. This expansion was primarily fueled by consumer spending, which saw a boost from a 4.2% rise in disposable income during Q4 of 2023. On the downside, escalating costs resulted in a dip in the personal savings rate.

The perception of affordability among Americans underwent a shift, with a growing number feeling the need for substantially higher incomes to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. Changes were also noticed in spending habits, with a greater emphasis placed on recreation and health rather than dining out and overseas travel.

Disposable income showed geographical variations across the U.S. States located in the Great Plains reported higher levels in comparison to regions such as Hawaii and certain areas of the Deep South. In Georgia, the per capita adjusted after-tax income stood at $51,048, paired with a cost of living that was 4.2% below the national average.

Story 3: Loudermilk Applauds Razor Thin Passage of Mayorkas Impeachment Articles

Congressional Republicans, including Representative Barry Loudermilk, have expressed satisfaction over the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They accuse him of neglecting to enforce immigration laws and secure the border effectively. Mayorkas, the first Latino to fill this role, becomes the second Cabinet member in U.S. history to face impeachment. Despite this development, it is considered improbable that the Senate will vote for his conviction.

Immigration has emerged as a pivotal issue in the upcoming elections, with voters demonstrating growing concerns about border security. President Biden has condemned the impeachment, labeling it as an act of unconstitutional partisanship.

We’ll be right back.

Story 4: Mental Health Will be Focus of Annual Daffodil Festival

The annual Daffodil Festival at Georgia State University's Newton Campus is set to highlight mental health advocacy this year, featuring key speakers Dr. Eve Byrd and Ryan Greenstein from The Carter Center. The event, aptly themed "Be Kind to Your Mind," is dedicated to addressing mental health challenges prevalent in society.

Joining the discussions will be a panel comprised of mental health counselors and community liaisons from neighboring counties. Adding to the diverse range of topics, English professor Dr. Valerie Matthews will present insights into financial abuse as depicted in literature and its implications in contemporary life.

Attendees can look forward to an array of activities including crafting seed "bombs," practicing yoga, and enjoying poetry readings. The festival will culminate with a history walk among the blooming daffodils.

Story 5: Costco makes a huge change members need to know about

Costco is a company recognized for its business strategy that emphasizes low prices, member-centric services, and vigilant monitoring of market trends. Despite its reputation for stability and gradual adaptation to changes, it has recently incorporated e-commerce and same-day delivery through Instacart into its operations to remain competitive.

In a significant recent development, Richard Galanti, Costco's long-serving CFO, has decided to step down. Galanti, whose tenure at Costco spanned nearly four decades, will be replaced by Gary Millerchip, currently serving as CFO at Kroger. This marks a rare instance of the company appointing an external candidate to such a high-ranking position.

Galanti's unexpected departure from Costco comes as a surprise to many, and the introduction of Millerchip, with his extensive experience in banking and grocery retail, brings a fresh perspective to the leadership team of the company.

Story 6: Governor to send Georgia Guard troops to southern border

Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia has ordered the deployment of additional troops from the Georgia National Guard to the U.S. southern border. This move is intended to bolster the Texas Guard's Operation Lone Star. Kemp's fifth trip to the border underscores Georgia's dedication to border security in light of perceived federal inaction.

The additional troops will aid in the establishment of a forward command post and will work in close coordination with the Texas Guard. The Georgia legislature has expressed its support for the mission through resolutions.

In addition to this, Kemp plays a significant role in the American Governors' Border Strike Task Force. This initiative targets transnational criminal organizations that pose security threats at the border.

This action responds to the increasing concerns related to illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and security threats at the border. It reinforces the commitment of states to maintain law and order.

Story 7: An American tragedy turns Kansas City Chiefs’ parade into day of mourning in Kansas City

A celebration turned somber in Kansas City, Missouri, as the Super Bowl parade of the Kansas City Chiefs was marred by a shooting incident. The joyous scenes of children playing football and families partaking in the event were starkly contrasted by the ensuing chaos. The unfortunate incident resulted in one fatality and left 21 individuals, including nine children, injured.

Despite recurring incidents of gun violence, the issue remains a persistent problem, triggering calls for decisive action from leaders and citizens alike. The sudden transition from jubilation to sorrow underscored the harsh reality of gun violence in the United States, leaving the city and its inhabitants deeply impacted. The incident serves as a grim reminder that the threat of violence is omnipresent, even amidst celebrations.
