STORY 1: 3M joins DuPont in seeking to block publication of water pollution settlement details
3M Company has joined DuPont in attempting to block the release of settlement details in a water pollution lawsuit brought by the City of Rome. The lawsuit, initiated in 2019, sought to recover costs related to the removal of PFAS and PFOAS from the city's drinking water. While Georgia law mandates that approved settlements become public record, both 3M and DuPont argue that the settlements fall under a trade secret exemption. The records are currently being withheld, pending a court hearing scheduled for October 9. So far, 32 defendants have agreed to pre-trial payouts, totaling over $159 million, to address water pollution issues in Rome......…….Get more info at northwestgeorgianews.com
STORY 2: Calhoun man arrested after opening fire on deputy at Sheriff's Office
A Calhoun man, identified as 45-year-old Amara D. Toure, was arrested after opening fire on deputies at the Gordon County Sheriff's Office. The incident occurred when Toure entered the Sheriff's Office lobby, inquired about its opening time, and then fired shots at a deputy sitting in a parked patrol car. The deputy took cover behind other vehicles, and a second deputy emerged with a rifle, firing a shot in Toure's direction, prompting him to surrender. No one was injured in the incident. Toure faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, possession of a firearm during a crime, and theft by receiving stolen property. The GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
STORY 3: Cedartown community shows support for Nick Chubb following season-ending injury
Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb, a former Cedartown High School and Georgia football standout, suffered a severe knee injury during a televised game. The injury is believed to be a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, requiring six to eight months of recovery, sidelining him for the season. Chubb, known for his community involvement, received an outpouring of support from his hometown of Cedartown. Cedartown Middle School held a Nick Chubb Day, and local businesses created "Chubb Strong" T-shirts to raise funds for Moms United, a nonprofit founded by Chubb's sister. Supporters wore these shirts during a high school football game in Dalton.

STORY 4: GNTC graduate receives Life Saver Award
Jennifer Nunez, a recent graduate of Georgia Northwestern Technical College's Law Enforcement Academy, received the Life Saver Award from the Dalton Police Department. She saved a man's life by performing CPR when responding to a call where the man was unresponsive in his yard. Nunez, a rookie officer, had just completed her training and started working in the field. She credits her CPR training from GNTC for her quick response. The man she saved later thanked her for her actions. The commendation from the police chief highlighted her dedication to their mission of providing professional, quality police service.
STORY 5: City of Calhoun amends parking code, makes Historic Preservation Commission appointments
Calhoun's City Council made changes to its parking code during a recent meeting. These amendments aim to regulate public parking spaces in the Downtown Development District, Calhoun Business District, and the municipal Historic District, ensuring greater availability for general business use. The changes prohibit vehicle displays for sale, mechanic work, and advertising. Vehicles cannot be left unattended for over 24 hours or used as overflow parking from mechanic shops. Additionally, the council made appointments to the Historic Preservation Commission, approved pouring licenses, and agreed to provision of services with ePlan Solutions Inc. They also approved surplus requests for two Dodge Chargers. The next council meeting is scheduled for October 9 at the Depot, open to the public.
